Par-4 island greens?
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:16:08 AM »
Almost every island green seems to be on a par-3, understandably. The few others are on par-5's (Woodlands, English Turn, that course in South Africa). I understand why there aren't more island-green par-4's, but I'm curious just how many are out there.

There's a short par-4 island green on #13 at Valhalla, and when I was young I played a course in Palm Springs that had a 320-ish yard par-4 with an island green. Those are the only two I can recall. Surely there are others?

Matt,

There is actually a par 5 with an island green 5 at Elisefarm GC, a Martin Hawtree design outside of Malmo, in south of Sweden. I don't have a picture of the hole but you can get a basic outlook here. It's no 12, btw.

It is a solid layout otherwise. But I don't think that this particular hole blends very well with the more classic british influcenced style that Hawtree used for the rest of the course.

I played one at Phantom Horse in phoeniz, az. It's a resort course that's very residential, but I think they've since redesigned it. Not only was it an island green par 4, but the tee shot was blind, and it was almost driveable.

Not full islands (water on 3 sides) but Bay Harbor has one of the worst. The Él Campion (sp) has one of the earliest. 1926. Both are par 4's.

There are a couple very early examples at Darien, CT's Wee Burn CC.

I've played two myself: the 7th at Gene Hamm's Tradition Club just north of Pawleys Island, and the 18th at Doral's Gold course (recently renovated by Ray Floyd...I don't know if the island green still remains.

I don't remember which hole it is but I recall a par 4 with an island green on the "Experience at Koele" golf course on Lanai   :P.

The 18th at The Woodlands Resort Panther Trail course is a par 4 with an island green. The hole like most of the course is pretty crappy. When it was still the North Course and redone it was a good golf course but now it's just not very good.

This is a really good hole and even drivable under the right circumstances.

I believe the 9th at Shackamaxon Country Club in Westfield, NJ has an island green.  It is a 390 yard dog-leg left.  The course was designed by Tillinghast in 1916.  I think there is an old picture of it in the Tillinghast trilogy of books.

I played a couple of tournaments there when I was a kid! That's a scary hole. I'm pretty sure it still exists.

Mike - You are correct about the 9th at Shackmaxon. Its a great hole, with a heroic, cape-style carry from the tee and then forced carry/semi-blind approach with the clubhouse in the background. The pictures with the old clubhouse in the back are great, but it has gone under major renovation. The course itself is in the process of a renovation as well. PLayed there earlier in the summer and had a great time.

Matt -

#14 at Oakhurst CC (Clayton, CA) is a short par-4 to a green that is almost an island. There is a creek that wraps around the front and both sides of the green.

There is a par-5 at Old Orchard (a Tillinghast course in Eatontown. NJ) that has an island green.

I would imagine it would be difficult to have a really long par-4 island green. A very large island and even then the far more likelihood of dunking the ball would make such a thing very difficult and very likely to discourage players.

Here is the clbhouse and island green at Stonelick Hills. par-5 #9.

Fiddlesticks Long Mean has one on a par four and another on a par five.

The green on the left is a par 4 of approximately 400 yards from the back tee.  The green on the right is on a par five of 530 yards or so.

While not ideal because many could dump a bucket of balls in the pond, I think the ninth is a really fun hole. An agressive tee shot can yield an approach of 120 yards but it needs to be dead straight.  A conservative tee shot yields an approach of 170 or so which is real tough in any significant wind.  Some trees and waste bunkers on the edge of the fairway make for some interesting go for it/lay up decisions if a tee shot is off the fairway.

If you mean a green that is surrounded by a hazard on nearly all sides and from which recovery is impossible or near-impossible, I would nominate the 8th at Pine Valley, either green!

Steve,

Certainly not by me. I do like it there a bunch - O'Brien doesn't because he doesn't understand that a par 4 can be good without requiring driver off the tee.

The 4th hole three is a cracker as well.
