BUDA?
« on: September 29, 2009, 09:15:00 AM »
Ok, I'm fairly new here....so what does BUDA stand for and;

1. where can I find it?
2. if I find it, what do I do with it?
3. is it safe?
4. can it be confused with a BUPA?
5. how can I join it?

Thanks,
Gareth  :)

You just missed it!

Buda Cup (B-oo-da K-up) n. - an annual matchplay event between Europe and US-based GCA members, played at different venues around Britain (and if rumours are to be believed, perhaps the Continent in 2010...). So named because Sean Arble bought the trophy in Budapest.

1. No one knows, though Mark Bourgeois was repeatedly suggested last week as the possble current custodian of the trophy.

2. Bring it to next year's Buda.

3. Only if you don't inhale.

4. Dunno.

5. Stay tuned on here.

Gareth,

It's short for The Budapest Cup, an annual gathering of GCA types for a three day match, most recently played this year at Royal St Georges and Royal Cinque Ports.  The only danger is to your liver.  There is no danger of confusing it with any health insurance product.  Where to find it next year will, I have no doubt, be the subject of much discussion in the ensuing weeks.  You can join it by asking to jusrt as soon as the dates and venues are sorted.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

BUDA (more formally, "The Budapest Cup") had its genesis in a Ryder Cup-format gathering of 20 or so GCA.com (and other) folk at Dornoch/Brora in 2003, and has continued each year at the following prime/secondary venues:

2004--Painswick (no secondary venue)
2005--Littlestone/Deal
2006--Hoylake/Wallasey
2007--Alwoodley/Moortown
2008--Lundin/Elie
2009--Deal/Sandwich

As to your specific questions:

1.  You can find it wherever it is--just click the heels of your sparkly red pumps and say to yourself, "There's no place like BUDA!"  Or, just follow the website.  Next year's venue will be revealed as soon as it is chosen.
2.  If and when you find it, send a check to whomever is organising it that year.  What you do with BUDA is up to you.
3.  This is a relative question and cannot be answered directly within the current Home Office guidelines regarding adult endangerment.
4.  Only indirectly
5.  Our motto is "Quis paget entrat."

Hope this helps

Rich

Brilliant stuff, Rich, quoting the St Cake's school motto.  Here's a more or less complete run down on St Cake's found via Google:

St Cake's School is an imaginary public school, run by a Mr R.J. Kipling (BA, Leicester). The headmaster's name is part of the joke regarding the name "St Cakes", in reference to Mr Kipling cakes. Articles featuring the school parody both the "Court and Social" columns of The Times and The Daily Telegraph, and the traditions and customs of the public school system. The school's motto is Quis paget entrat (Who pays gets in), though variations on this arise from time to time, such as when the school decided to only admit the daughters of very rich Asian businessmen, and the motto became All praise to the prophet, and death to the infidel. While the school's newsletters feature extraordinary and unlikely results and prizes, events such as speech days, founder's days, term dates and feast days are announced with topical themes, such as underage drinking, drug abuse, obesity, celebrity culture, antisocial behaviour and cheating in exams. The school is sometimes referred to as "the Eton of the West Midlands", the joke being that the West Midlands are not regarded as a place where such a school is likely to be located, though there are public boarding schools in the area in real life, such as Rugby School.

You importantly forgot to mention the creator of the legendary St. Cakes, i.e. the incomparable UK satirical magazine, "Private Eye."

It helps that PE has been given such a rich field to plow. HP Sauce practically writes itself these days.

BUDA inside Mount Weather. Novak fallout rendered(!) me png within humint community, we're going to need an asset from elint or sigint, preferably retired / scrubbed file, and local, for the snatch and grab op.

Any chance of the participants in BUDA taking on the might of the "ANZACS" down-under at some stage ?

If it's in Perth or Melbourne in December 2010 I'll be there  ;D
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Funny timing this, I actually PMed a bunch of this site's Aussie contributors last night to gauge what interest there might be in a Buda-style event Down Undah around Feb or March 2011.

I had Barny Dunes/The Lost Farm in mind, with pre/post matches a handy trip away back across Bass Strait on the sandbelt.

Many Buda participants indicated some interest in such an event last week, so I am going to try to make it happen.

Stay tuned.

Good idea - if ever an excuse for the Northern hemisphere lads to escape their "winter" surely a trip to Oz is the ticket ?

Besides the courses look like they'll be right at home (when's Lost Farm slated to open ?)

And besides - you could get to the "Sandbelt" after all  ;)

PS: Will Ash Towe be batting for the POMS or Kiwis in such a contest  8)

KP, I sent you a PM. Did you see it. Mike Clayton told me a few months back that TLF will be open by Nov 2010, so we should have both courses at Bridport to enjoy, though a combination of two courses on the sandbelt, or even two of the Mornington tracks, would be hard to beat.

Kevin as a lover of Oz golf especially the Royals I'd love to come down under however it's just too far for a week or 10 days unless you are at the front of a 747. Two of my last three trips have been for 3 weeks and flying premium economy and it's still too far. Sadly few guys can get 2 or 3 weeks bail from senior management!

How long a flight is it to OZ?  I remember Tom D and Mike Clayton saying that you cant see Ayers Rock and The sand belt and Sydney on the same short trip.  What's the best way to do a week?  Ten Days?

West Coast US to Sydney or Melbourne is 14-15hrs.

10 days could see you see most all of the golf you could want, some culture as well, perhaps even Uluru (the new name for Ayers Rock) and head hope happy and suntanned.

Such is the spirit of BUDA the only no show last week was the actual BUDA cup itself!!

The cup finally made a late appearance - in the cellar safe of the Littlestone clubhouse. Peter and I were so knackered last year after the drive back from Lundin that the next morning must have been a blur. Peter deposited it there and both of us promptly forgot about it.
