Some AUSTRALIA! questions...
« on: September 27, 2009, 11:38:27 PM »
Hi everybody,

At the end of my stay here in lovely Australia, I will get the chance to travel around with my parents. We will be in Sydney somewhere around the 3rd to 6th of december and in Melbourne and Tasmania after that until the 14th of december.

Which courses to play has been discussed plenty of times so that is already planned.... I just have some more questions:

1. The Australian open will take place at NSW from the 3rd to the 6th of december, will anybody be there?

2. What is the status of St. Andrews Beach at the moment?

3. What is the best way to contact RM and KH?

4. What is the best way to get to Barnbougle Dunes from Melbourne?

Thanks very much in advance! :)

1. I'm sure there'll be some Sydneysiders at the event.
2. It has just re-opened as a public course.  http://www.standrewsbeachgolf.com.au
3. As you would any other club - check out their websites for contact details.  There are a few guys on this board who are members so it may pay to enquire if they will host you.
4. Flight from Tullamarine Airport to Launceston via Jetstar or Tiger airways. Then hire a car.

Does all this dust in NSW have any deleterious effect on the greens there?

I just think of it as the region getting a light topdressing...

Hi Emil

I will be a good chance at going there on one of the days - IM me and I'd be glad to try and show you around.

What courses are you planning on seeing whilst here ?

Emil,

I also plan to attend at some point during the open, and would be happy to take you for a round of golf somewhere.

How old are you? Where are you at the moment?

Cheers,

Andy

Emil,

I will be at The Open from Wednesday.
If we run into each other I can let you know about KH at least.
For Barnbougle go to www.webjet.com.au and check out the cheapest fares. Often its cheaper to go down with one and back with another - Virgin and Jet- Star

Just a suggestion, but as a newbie I would like to meet as many GCA'ers as possible. So maybe a round of golf somewhere?

Terry,

I am not playing - but if anybody wants to go over the new course at The Lakes - venue for 2010 Open - we could organize that.

Mike,

That would be really cool. Lately it seems I have driven past the Lakes hundreds of times and I love the look of it now. I should really keep my eyes on the road.  ;D

Surely - Mike needs to revisit the place of his "youtube" claim to fame  ;D

Yes - would be great to catch-up. Hopefully I can get our friend Mr Summerall out to the event as well  ;)

Andy / Mike it would be good to try and get out to The Lakes. I'm seeing the changes for the first time in November - I hear some pretty good things about it.

Great to hear Terry. I can organise a game at the course I work at on the Northern Beaches, it's not great but mostly in good condition, with a couple of good holes. Otherwise I'm not really fussed where the game is.

I'll be at the Open on Saturday and Sunday, and perhaps earlier, if I decide its worth taking some annual leave.

Thanks very much for your replies!

Kevin:
I don't have golf plans for Sydney (just watching the pros) although Mike's offer sounds fabolous. In Melbourne I'd like to see Royal Melbourne West, and either Woodlands or St Andrews Beach. In Tasmania, I'm looking forward to a (hopefully) 54-hole day of golf at Barnbougle and to sneak on the Lost Farm before the sunset ;D.

Andy:
I'm actually 16 years old ( :o nobody was supposed to know  :o  ;)) and I'm staying in Brisbane right now.

I no longer live there, but might be able to help you out in Melbourne - send me an email (chris.kane @ finance.gov.au).

Andy,

that could work in well, I'll be staying at Curl curl for some of the time. Venue may depend on if we get any other takers.

Mike,

early morning stroll sounds ideal

Mike

Great idea - look forward to it.

Emill

I strongly urge you to put a visit to The Lakes into your itinerary. The course has has had a number of architects work on it over the years and whilst you may not not know what it looked like in the past from all accounts it may now be something "special".

It used to have quite an uninspiring F9 (notwithstanding the 1st hole) and I'm led to believe Mike "chainshaw" Clayton has kept his reputation intact  ;D

Yes, I think you can still see the old layout on Google earth.

I just looked for some photos of the redesign on their website and wow, it looks fantastic!

Emil, I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised. I thought I would be one of the young ones on here (being 22). I was going to suggest meeting up for drinks if you were in Sydney, but alas you are a too young  ;). The offer of a game at any time is still there though.
