Good luck! George is one of the outstanding amateur competitors in the game today.

By the way, Beverly should be playing pretty F and F -- I don't think Chicago has gotten much rain lately.

Paul is no fool: he's caddying for one of the clear favorites in the field.  I'm guessing Zahringer will be around for tomorrow's matches.

Walked the course for a few hours yesterday.  The course conditions are ideal and Bev is playing magnificently; fast and true.  Given the ideal scoring conditions and playing under 6,700 with minimal breezes and light dried out rough, Bev has held up well to the best senior amateurs.  Wish I could get back out for some of the matches.  Good luck to Paul and Terry the rest of the way.

Paul,     Zahringer sure looked solid both days.  Course looked as good as I've ever seen it, greens will be pretty quick as the week progresses . Hope you can bring home a winner,   Wish you well,  Jack

Sadly, our local historian saw his player lose today in the round of 16. George Zahringer, after two wins in the first two rounds of match play, lost 2 and 1 today.

This Cheesehead scribe notes with interest that two Badgers are left in the quarterfinals -- Mark Bemowski, a fairly legendary golfer in these parts (who won the US Senior Am in '04), and Kenosha's John Pallin, who has his daughter on the bag. Pallin is a member at the Ross-designed Kenosha CC, which might be proving helpful in negotiating the Ross greens at Beverly.  The two could conceivably meet in the finals, which means Beverly and/or the USGA would have to scrounge up a wheel of cheese to go along with the winner's trophy.

Quarters and semi's today, with more wonderful weather expected.

Pallin looked strong when I saw him on Sunday and has played very consistently.  Bemowski hung tough after his fellow competitor birdied the 1st 3 holes and put him 3 down out of the gate.

Quick update after AM rounds:

It's former US Amateur champion Vinnie Giles (2 and 1) in the semi's against Kenosha's John Pallin (2 and 1), with the other bracket featuring John Grace (3 and 1), who lost the '74 US Amateur to Jerry Pate, against Mark Bemowski of Mukwonago in suburban Milwaukee (2 and 1), who won this title in '04.

Quite a year for Wisconsin golfers in both the pro and amateur ranks.

Am out at Beverly as a Volunteer now that my caddie career has ended (for a second time!).  Saw some really excellent golf today and this afternoon's matches should be very exciting.

No joy in Cheeseland tonight... :(

The Giles/Pallin match must have been a blast to watch -- 10 changes in the score of the match through 13 holes. Looks like Giles played steady down the stretch to clinch a 1-up win.

BTW, kudos to Golfweek, the only major periodical who:

1 - has Beverly rated amongst the Top 100 courses - which, ask any contestant or USGA official, agrees with totally

and

2 - sent a writer to cover the USGA Senior Amateur


Glad to see that Golfweek 'gets it' even if the other publications do not.

That being said, it really is this Beverly Championship golf course that identified the best player this week - Vinny Giles.

Following in the tradition of Evans, Ouimet, Palmer and Nicklaus, amongst others, Mr. Giles will make a great addition to the "Wall of Champions" here at Beverly.

John Grace gave him a helluva fight, being all even heading to #18.  Grace putted first, barely missing his birdie.  Then Vinny, who was about 12 feet above the front-pin position, ever-so-gently rolled it into the hole to win this championship in style.

Congrats to Vinny Giles and congrats to Beverly CC!!!
