Closing Par 3's

Folks - I feel sure that at some stage there must have been discussion on closing Par 3’s yet search results have revealed little.

If anyone is aware of such a thread I would be grateful if you could post the relevant link/s for me.

I don't have any links and not sure how you could use the search function for this, but Pasatiempo is the only course I can think with a closing par 3 that gets a lot of respect.  That is one great hole.

Garden City Men's has a closing Par 3.... Hit the ball too far right and you're in the patio.  You're in play though so put on a sport jacket and hit your shot!

An old Dye course (circa 1973) Harbor Trees CC in Noblesville IN has a par-3 18th.

The course is part of a housing development that sits within a J-shaped reservoir.  Of course water front homesites sold for top dollar and Mr. Dye used the two small bits of water front he was given  (5 & 18) for par 3s.

Didn't the '97 US Open at Congressional end on a Par 3?  I forgot who supervised the makeover prior to that tournament.

It did.  Lehman needed an ace on the final hole to tie as I recall.

Cascades in VA finishes 5-5-3.  Very interesting "flow" at the end and a pretty good par 3 finish.

Hope Valley, a Donald Ross design in Durham, NC that gets a pretty good deal of respect in the area finishes with a very strong par-3.

S&A (twice Ryder Cup venue) and Lytham (current Open course) both open with par 3s

Forest of Arden in UK closes with a par 3 (not a great course, but not bad)

Boston GC, Gil Hanse designs, is the highest rated on the modern list ending in a par-3.

Tillinghast's Binghamton CC ends that way, as does Ross' Makatewah in Cincinnati. Willie Park's par-3 18th at Congress Lake (Ohio) is still in place. I have a list of 40 such courses, half of which have held prominent events, which I'll post somewhere or publish.

I'm actually a bit surprised more courses don't end with a par 3, particluarly Ross courses.  He had a tendency to put clubhouses in corners (probably for shorter utility connections) and whenever I am faced with that situation, its often the case that a par 3 finish hole uses the tight land around it quite well.

My home course. Northcliffe GC, closes with a par 3 which has been regarded as the best finishing hole in Yorkshire.

Misquamicut has a very difficult blind uphill par 3 closer.

Years ago, I posted a llist of closing par 3 holes here (orignally produced by Ron Whitten) and many added to that list.  As I recall, 6 of the top 100 GD courses ended in a par 3 (at that time and Congressional was one of them)

The story and history at Congressional was quite interesting.  Both courses finished with par 3s and at the '76 PGA Championship they used two holes from the gold course in order not to finish on a par 3. They used that same setup when they played the Kemper Open at Congressional.  At the '97 Open the USGA gave some explanation about sticking with golfing traditions and finished with the par 3, however, they still played two of the par 5s as par 4s.  Thereafter, the par 3 18th was redone/rebuilt so that it played away from the clubhouse as the 10th hole.  There has been much discussion about the hole and how it fits with the rest of the architecture as well as the awkwardness of the routing. 

I don't know if par 3s work as finishing holes for tournament play - for member play I don't really see anything bad about it. 

What I was wondering is if August NGC finished with a par 3 would it be better if it was a design such as #12 or #16?
