Gleneagles - Queen's or Centenary?
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:54:29 PM »
I am going to be attending a conference at Gleneagles in September.  The hosts of the conference are offering a round of golf on either the Centenary or the Queen's Course.  Which should I choose? Or should I say neither and pay £110 out of my own pocket to play the King's?

(Note that I will likely also play the King's course at least one other time as well).

Wayne,

I've not played Centenary, my friends who are Gleneagles members have no use for it and won't arrange it when we visit! I recommend Queen's without reservation; it's by no means a mere relief course, but terrific in its own right and essentially a junior version of King's, and of course King's is not to be missed.

You're not going to Scotland without visiting some links courses as well, are you?

I recently played the Kings and Queens (same fee for each) and walked over to peek at the first and last holes of the PGA Centenary.

Given your conditions, the Queens should be your choice. The first 5 or 6 holes are a bit weak, but after that the course really takes flight.

Ken - I will be visiting some links courses but I haven't figured out which ones yet.  According to the Links Trust website The Old Course is pretty much unavailable from Sep 14 through early October, which is the time of my visit, due to R&A events and then the Dunhill so it doesn't look like I can get on the Old Course.  But Kingsbarns would be a possibility and some of the other courses in Fife like Crail, Lundin, and Leven look like fun, not to mention the New and Jubilee.

I will likely be in Edinburgh so I was thinking North Berwick, Gullane and trying to get on to Muirfield.  Of course Carnoustie is not too far from Gleneagles and I love Cruden Bay so I may try to get back there.  I haven't been golfing in Scotland since 1998 so I am quite looking forward to it.

Wayne,

In Fife, play Kingsbarns if the fee doesn't bother you (165 pounds!!!). If you get a 3 day ticket, you can play the New, Eden, Jubilee, and Castle courses for 180 pounds total.

In East Lothian, Muirfield an N. Berwick are the best choices. I wasn't wowed by Gullane.

If you head to Aberdeen, Cruden Bay pairs nicely with with Royal Aberdeen and/or Murcar.

Castle Stuart and Nairn are worth a look if you make it all the way up to Inverness.

There are also some good options out west that I have yet to experience (Prestwick, Troon, Turnberry, Western Gailles).

Pick a direction and enjoy.

Thanks for the advice Kyle.  I don't think I will make it up to Inverness - if I did then I may as well go all the way and play Dornoch and Brora as I did in 98.  On my previous trip I played Gullane, North Berwick, TOC, Jubilee, Cruden Bay, Carnoustie, Royal Dornoch and Brora.  I might go west this time as Prestwick and Western Gailes would be lots of fun, but business meetings in Edinburgh may make it easier to do the East Lothian courses.

Wayne,

Though I'm really keen to play the Queens, I haven't managed it yet (it was under about a foot of snow last time I was up there), but I have walked round the PGA Centenary and here is the photo tour I did FYI...

I think you can see that I'd rather play the Queens myself but maybe it depends what you are after? Maybe if you want to be able to watch the Ryder Cup in several years time and be able to say that youve played the course then maybe the PGA is for you? But depending upon how much time, and money, you have, perhaps a free round over the PGA wont be as dissapointing as if you spent your own money, and then pay to play the two other Braid courses yourself?

Whatever you choose, enjoy!

Cheers,

James

Wayne,

If you have not played the Golf House Club (Elie) in Fife, that's certainly worth visit.

It seems pretty much unanimous that the Queen's is the way to go.  Thanks for the input folks!
