Phenomenally fun Sub-280 yard par-4's

1. Without water.

2. Without overkill with bunkers.

The little nine-hole course on the western coast of Scotland -- Traigh -- has one (and nearly another, at 283 yards):

-- Jimmy's Choice, 257 yds, uphill  through a narrow chute of gorse on either side at the ideal landing spot for a drive off the tee. The green is deep but very narrow.

-- McEachen's Leap, 283 yds, with gorse all along the left side of a doglegging left hole that moves uphill. The second shot is blind to a very small punchbowl green.

The 11th at Painswick!

The 14th is just as good, IMO, but from memory it's a kick over 280 yards.

Brad -- It has three! Nos. 11, 14 and 15. All have an element of blindness to them.

Stoneham's 13th is a beaut.  Anything right will make it very difficult to hit the green in two.  Anything left heads for the trees.  The green is raised and tilted left.  The green is about 17 feet wide at the neck.  Oh yea, its a blind drive.  I think the hole tops out at 273.

Beau Desert's 9th is pretty damn fun.

I cna think of others which are good holes, but not as fun because of blindness - like Cruden Bay's 3rd.  The 8th is also not bad and it isn't blind.

I am sure Strandhill may have one or two candidates I am just unsure about the4 yardage.

West Cornwall's 13th is very fine.  One of those downhillers which holds suspense.

I seem to recall Gullane 3 had a few back to back sub sub 280 yarders and one was very good - maybe number 5?

Ciao

Joe,

Your entry is DQ'd...too many bunkers!!

I would submit #8 at Indian Canyon.  260 yard dog left that plays straight up the hill.  Big hitters can get there with a big draw but over-do it and you'll struggle to save par.  And once your on the green the fun really starts with a wild two -tiered green that is highly sloped.  May the Lord have mercy on your soul if you get on the back tier with a pin in the front..  ;D

I know it looks like quite a few bunkers, but there's only two that affect your decision on the tee...the two front bunkers at the greenside.

But, still....I'll take the DQ moniker and wear it proudly!

Kalen:

The best hole discussed thus far is probably Joe's hole at Kingsley...the green is insane..INSANELY FUN...

Disqualify me too if you must but the 13th at Kingsley is exactly what you are looking for!

I'm sure Kinglsey 13 is a terrific hole, but when i read the original post, I meant it to mean identify terrific short par 4s where hazards and otherwise aren't dictating the line of play...

Blimey, every time I think of a great short par 4, it turns out to be over the 280 yard mark, so this is tricky.

I'll second Sean's suggestion of the 9th at Beau Desert which is 260 off the back, 252 off the yellows.

Though not universally loved, the 18th at North Berwick is 278 off the back, 271 from the yellow. Look out for the car park!

Others require a little manipulation as it were...
The 3rd at Mackenzie's Cavendish is a great short par 4, plays downhill and you can run it in from right to left but too far left and there are bunkers or the green drops off. 281 yards from the yellows, but as its downhill, maybe it can sneak in, and I seem to recall its a Tom Doak favourite? The 4th at St Enodoc plays 279 off the yellows which is where most of us would play it from, and what about the 14th at the Kings at Gleneagles at 249 off the yellows?

Having listed those above, I would think that any sub 280 yard par 4 is within range for enough people for it to be damn good fun having a go at the green, even if the architecture itself isn't great?

Cheers,

James

The seventh at Elie, blind, aim at the marker pole, 256 yards up hill.  Great little hole.  There are two other par 4s at Elie that are barely over the 280 cut off that are just as fun, #6 and #10.  There is a great variety to the 16 par 4s at Elie, what a fun course.

My memory is not what it used to be ... and I can't find a scorecard anywhere ... but I recall a great short 4 par at Leatherstocking without water but with some really cool, if not severe, grass bunkers. If anyone knows more, speak up!

Fenway Golf Club: White Plains, NY (although now they use their fancier Scarsdale PO)

1st hole: 285 yards from the back tee.

The image shows the green in the lower left quadrant running parallel, to the 2nd hole to the left.  The teeing area is right ouside the Men's locker room door. Very cool. The entrance road right behind the green is OB.

Many years ago I would not concede a 5th putt to my Dad. I am a much nicer person today!

9 at CPC?

That can't be a 280 yard shot to the front edge, can it?

Just looked at my yardage book, it's 278 to the front edge. And downhill.

#12 at Cuscowilla is a gem.  Begs you to pull driver.

Also, although maybe a bit quirky, the 3rd at Chaska Town Course is pretty fun.
