hogan and van gerbig at seminole New
« on: June 17, 2009, 11:22:50 AM »
good piece in sport illustrated's golf plus authored by past seminole president barry van gerbig on his memories of hogan at seminole. interesting that hogan slammed dick wilson as a golf architect because he wasn't found of wilson's fairway bunker on the second hole. that intrigues me because of hogan's fondness for the well bunkered pine tree golf club designed by wilson.

Thanks for posting this. It's really good stuff. Hogan made the SI cover twice. I like this one:

Pat,

That would be the 8th tee shot at ANGC.

I think the SI cover with Hogan at Augusta's 8th tee is insightful.  Note how thin and scruffy the turf appears, even on the tee.  The tournament date did not give the bermuda sufficient time to green up and thicken as hot nights are essential for that purpose.  I have read quotes from Nicklaus that the course was pretty ragged through the 1960's with terrible lies and mud on the ball being commonplace.

The conversion to a perennial ryegrass was therefore a necessary move, even if it ultimately resulted in the greening effect so often belittled on GCA.

It was designed to be a c/l bunker. The picture foreshortens things. It was located in the landing area.

Note the location of the Bunker as compared to today.

Patrick,

Is the bunker not better positioned today?  It forces the golfer to play left, virtually prohibiting him from reaching the green in two.  Otherwise, it must be flown or flirted with to leave the best opportunity to reach the green.

The photographs also shows that trees are not a new element at Augusta National Golf Club.

Patrick,

Is the bunker not better positioned today?

For whom, the 40 to 140 Pros and Ams that play it for 2 to 4 days, once a year, or, for the thousands of member and guest rounds played throughout the entire season ?

It forces the golfer to play left, virtually prohibiting him from reaching the green in two.

Not really.  You  can reach the green in two from the middle of the fairway.

Otherwise, it must be flown or flirted with to leave the best opportunity to reach the green.

I'd agree with that.

However, in the photo, the golfer had to make one of four choices, left, long, short or right.

We shouldn't view architecture solely in the context of the PGA Tour Pro's game.

The photographs also shows that trees are not a new element at Augusta National Golf Club.

James - thanks for posting that.  It was a very good read, from a unique perspective.

The older I get, the fonder I grow of Ben Hogan.  What he said to the young and adoring George Knudson was striking:

"You play tournament golf and so do I. Never call anyone you're trying to beat mister."

Patrick M - If you ever feel like sharing some stories, I'd love to hear about your experiences with and memories of some of the old-timers at Seminole.

Peter
