Pete Dye Golf Club Rankings.....What does it all mean?
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:21:05 PM »

Two years ago ranked 99 bt GD...today 57.

Golf week it is 4 on the modern list.

Victoria National has a large distance in rankings in GD and GW.

What does this tell us about not the courses but the ranking system?

Who is correct or are all the magazines correct but just in their own way?

What do the rankings mean to you?

 . . .

Interesting reading, for sure, but entirely subjective and virtually meaningless to me on a personal level.  I've played Pete Dye and enjoyed it, but would I rank it no. 4 modern?  No way.   But if Golfweek wants to do that, fine with me.  It's no different than arguing about whose basketball team  is the best, which is fun if you don't take it too seriously.  Too bad we can't have golf course play-off every year to decide the national champ.

Personaly when I see a course break the top 100 it peeks my interest and desire to someday make the trip to play.

But I'm not sure what a course ranked say 24 means.

When someone says a course in ranked 75 what is the mental picture you get?

It does get me a little more interested, too -- that's one of the reasons I find the rankings "interesting."  Between rank 24 and rank 75, there's no real mental difference to me coming from the numbers alone.  If anyone can figure out much from those numbers, it's not I.  Obviously, they're both (24 and 75) very good courses in some way or other.  There are also plenty of fine courses that are "unranked" -- the trick, and pleasure, is to find them.

Anthony,

For me anything from 1 thru 10 really doesn't matter to me. If it makes the list period it gets my
interest going as a place that maybe worth seeing. I mean chances of me seeing 1 thru 10 are slim to none
anyway so I just start at 11 thru 100 ;)  After that I think it's all subjective as far as numbers go. You could argue the list till your blue in the face and thats exactly what most of us like doing !

Pre-Internet, the GD Top 100, State Ranks and Places to Play were my source for scoping out potential places to play in unchartered territory.  Now if I'm going to visit an area for the first time, I can post a 'where to play?' message here, look up all the courses individually online and make an informed decision that way.  I think the ratings still play a role, just an ever-shrinking one.  GD's list seems to be deteriorating more rapidly than the others.

I really liked PDGC, but found it quite overwatered when I played it.  So much for Ron Whitten's "firm and fast" conditioning...
