New South Wales GC from the air c. 1943
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:57:24 PM »
I found this website while trying to find an image of Mackenzie's original course. By 1943 Eric Apperley had been working on the course for seven or eight years, so many changes have been made from the original layout, but it's really interesting nonetheless.

Of course anything built by 1943 should be available, because the website covers most of the state of NSW. You can have a browse at https://six.maps.nsw.gov.au/wps/portal/SIXViewer

Download SIX Viewer and find the site you want, then select the 1943 screen in the bottom right toolbar and lift that layer to the top. Easy

The fenceline is visible runing diagonally down from the top near the left, then turning sharply and running almost horizontal to the right. The holes you can see above there belong to St Michael's GC.

Good find Scott.  I'm impressed that 5 and 6 seem to be similarly bunkered today.

Nice one, Scott.

Points to note:
- 2nd green bunkering. I would love to see a topo map of the 2nd green back then. I'm sure it would have been much more playable.
- 3rd green has been move considerably.
- 4th bunkering
- 14th No tee behind the 13th green.

Apart from some difference in bunkering, I love the openess that the photo shows.

Not a topo, but here's the 2nd green in 1943, and today. It really is a terrible green. I wonder why it hasn't been redone.

I have been told that the green as it is today was done by Newton/Spence back about 20 years ago. That's why I would like to see a topo map to see if the bunker that is where the swale is now was so deep with so much gathering area on the green.

Being that nothing else I've seen by Apperly looks like the 2nd green is now, I would assume it was far more playable in 1943.

Serious question: did Newton design it pre- or post-plane incident?

Scott,

The accident was in July 1983 - I am pretty sure the green was done after that.
The Apperley green was very good.

Thanks Mike. I assumed it was.

The Apperley green was very good.

What was the rationale for changing it if it was good?

Is that a sand bunker short right of the green on the 14th and large one behind it ?

Looks like it, doesn't it? And a fairway trap on the left.

Scott, Kevin

I am sure the front bunker was there in 1980 (just as there wasn't any bunkers on 17 then).

My memory (which isn't perfect) was that there was only one greenside bunker on 5.  That is one reason I found the 1943 pictures interesting - the current build seems to reflect the 1943 build.

It's a bit hard to tell. There are a few 'strips' of white around some of the greens that I'm not sure whether they are bunkers of not. Don't forget, the army had the course for the last half of the war, so the condition may not have been too good.
