Golf Club of Georgia

What are peoples' thoughts on the two courses at Golf Club of Georgia?  I may be playing there in a couple weeks so I wanted to get some advance knowledge.  I know people on here don't like Arthur Hills courses, and I can't say I'm a huge fan either.  However, it is very cool that the club hosts the Georgia Cup every year.  I remember watching the match between Gary Wolstenholme and Nick Flanagan at the Creekside Course and really enjoying it.  Would love to hear some opinions.

I played there maybe seven years ago, and I can't remember which course exactly. However their theme there seems to be to try to be a true "mini-Augusta." The greens were really big, had tons of slope, and were really really fast.

Overall it is a cool place and a pretty good golf course...I don't think you will be blown away, but you should have a good time.

Hope this helps.

JNC:

I have found the Lakeside Course course to be a very enjoyable course, with an especially good stretch of holes starting at no. 10 and continuing through 13 or 14.

I suspect there are people out there who like the Creekside Course (never met one ;D), but it is not my cup of tea.  Too much target golf, long carries over hazards, trees in fairways and in front of greens, etc.

Somewhat lame but telling joke used to be that it cost $50k to join Lakeside Course but only $35k to join both courses.

Conditioning used to be over the top good on both courses, but I have not played there in several years and do not know if that is still the case.

I agree with Mike Leveille's assessment.  The Lakeside is very good and fun to play.  The Creekside was a major disappointment.  The clubhouse is interesting and unusual.

In the last year like many clubs it is struggling to compete against the other clubs in the area.

Still a fun set of courses.

I wouldnt dog Creekside I feel it has more architectural charm than the wide open layout on lakeside.  Creekside has tons of charm if you take the time to evaluate for design and not how you score.

Very tight and in the summer stagnant with the vegetation protecting any windflow.

The reason why its worth a look....most of the green complexes are raised and have really cool grading features.  Plus you can then reply to a earlier discussion thread about push-up greens once you have played this layout.

It was built in a swamp unlike TPC Sawgrass Hills didnt dig a bunch of holes for retention.  It also has a great Cape Hole utilizing the swamp.

If in the area I would attempt to get a round at The Standard Club.  It is the real deal and I wish more clubs would go this route in the renovation process.  The cheaper and possibly easier to get on sister style design of The Standard Club is another Riley renovation Rivermont in Alpharetta/Roswell.  By the way no pun intended with the get on sister comment...I am not that close to the North GA/NC Mountains!ha

Good Luck!  If you need any local eateries let me know.  I live a stones throw from Golf Club of GA.

JNC,

I worked at the course not long after it opened as a forecaddie.  Those were the days before the clubhouse and only Lakeside was the only course opened.

Lakeside won Best New Private in 1991.  As was mentioned, the course conditioning was flawless and there were conditioning parallels with Augusta.  The greens were quite difficult.  One noted PGA Tour player left the course in disgust after a U.S. Open Regional Qualifier describing the greens as "Mickey Mouse."  Like many of the high end courses around Atlanta, the bent grass greens could get mighty fast.

Overall, I liked the course.  There were some excellent holes (1, 6, 10, 12, 13, 16) and some that were just OK.   Lakeside is a fun round though.

Creekside has been discussed on here before.  It opened not long before I left so I only got about 4 rounds to caddie on it.  I will say it's unique.  If you're crooked off the tee it can be a long day.  I never cared for it although there is only one hole I believe is just horrible.  Hole #5 is the first par 5 on the front nine.  It's a forced carry drive followed by a forced carry to the green.  The hole is full of awkward angles that just don't fit.  I have a hard time accepting a hole where a player has layed up properly only to be blocked out of playing to the green by a grove of trees.  It's been 16 years since I've been on the course so my only hope is that this hole has somehow been changed.

In any event, have a fun day.  I'd love to go back and see the courses.  My most recent visit to Lakeside was in 2000.  The biggest change for me was all the houses surrounding the course.  None of them were there before.

JNC_Lyon,

Golf Club of Ga is a very nice facility and you will really enjoy Lakeside.  The back nine and especially 10-14, 16-18 are really great golf holes. As others have mentioned, their course conditions are usually super and the greens come alive if they are rolling quick.
