Plane Crash Kills Engineer & Biologist
« on: January 24, 2009, 12:35:10 PM »
Frank Protiva, a civil engineer, and Tom Moody, a wetlands biologist, both of Flagstaff, Arizona, were tragically killed yesterday morning in a small plane crash just south of Flagstaff.

Frank and Tom worked with us on The Hideout in Monticello, Utah. Frank also provided civil engineering for Flagstaff Ranch (Jerry Pate). I know he consulted on other courses, but do not have a full list.

Both were truly outdoors enthusiasts, and avid pilots. While working only on the fringes of golf, it hits home when people who have helped make your work come to life are suddenly gone. They will be missed.

Forrest

Certainly we work with a great many people in the creating of our work. They become friends and appreciated professionals. My regrets to you and to their families.

It might be an appropriate time to remember that there are many peoples efforts required to complete a golf course project.

I think people after forget that point. Rarely does a project come to be finished without many "heros" along the way. Most of them unsung, such as these two men.

In the new world of instant and digital news, an amazing audio clip was posted earlier today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUtFhCJxgn8

Apparently, it is believed that Frank and Tom may have attempted to set their plane down near a highway patrol officer who was in the middle of a traffic stop. In the early morning darkness and fog it may have been a last ditch effort to find help when they saw the flashing strobes of the patrol car.

You will hear the officer, followed by the low-flying plane and then the officer's quick plea for assistance. Unfortunately it ended in tragedy.
