Best holes never built...

What are some of the best holes that never made it into the ground?

I saw a handful today - but will await Tom Paul's comments before I list them.

As a sidebar, how about best holes you can invent yourself?  My old home course in Amherst, NY, is a nondescript muni with no memorable holes.  However, if you cross a bridge and drop a ball, you can play a phenomenal par three hole that crosses water twice and a greenside bunker once, coming in from the side at about 200-210 yards.  That's my contribution.

Kyle:

I'm sure you're thinking about what I call the 12th hole at Ardrossan (a course never built). The good news is the way I visualized the hole in play almost nothing at all needed to be done to the landform---eg almost no earthmoving at all, no bunkering etc. It would only need grassing for golf. So if anyone went out there and looked at it now they would be looking at the hole as it would be used in play (without grassing for golf).

I've seen a whole lot of holes in my life and this one would've been the biggest I ever saw and probably be quite a lot. I've never thought of it before this way but my estimate is it would be about 8-9 acres.

Well, as odd a question and topic as this is, I think I will weigh in. Ever since I have been going to Falls Lake in Raleigh, I saw a good stretch of land right along the water that would make a couple of very outstanding holes, if used correctly.

I also noticed a pretty good piece of land that would make for excellent golf in Florida as Jonathan Dickinson Park near Jupiter. Great sandy soil very good elevation changes across the property; most outstanding.

But beyond that, I am not sure.

Unquestionably the best holes I've ever seen that will NEVER get built is a large stretch on Highway 1 in Central California, south of Carmel.

North of Oceanside, Ca and South of San Clemente. Camp Pendleton there has some awesome land. So good that it was the scene of Shackelford's book, The Good Doctor. I drive through it at least twice a week and it never fails to inspire me.

In the early 1990's, the Olympic Club planned to build 6 holes for the revamped Ocean Course (designed by T. Weiskopf) on the ocean (west) side of Skyline Blvd. The 4 holes at the south end of the property, which sits in San Mateo County, got built. The 2 holes at the north end of the property, which sits in San Francisco County, had permitting issues which delayed their construction.

The 4 holes that got built were quite stunning. I am sure the 2 additional holes would have been as well. Unfortunately, the land under the whole area gave way. The damage to the existing holes was so bad the whole project was abandoned before the final 2 holes ever got built.
