Not destined for the trash can
« on: January 10, 2009, 12:59:14 PM »
In continuing to clear out and tidy my office I came across a note given to me by Mike Keiser (name dropping!). We met in Chicago and his enthusiasm had been fired by musical form, canons, cancrizans canons and so on. His note says simply, 'Why NOT golf holes that play both ways?' We discussed it on GCA at the time but I thought it might be appropriate to these times of enforced economy. Any views, other than setting up the relevant personal injury legal company?

I like the idea. Some possible issues / objections (after we kill all the lawyers):
  • Would have to be either a limited-play facility or a**hole membership -- who's going to purposely hit into a group coming up the adjacent fairway?
  • Need to put a lot of thought into the green complexes: in order to take full advantage of "Elysian Fields" the greens would need to be very large, so as to reward a specific angles in.

With luck, El Boqueron will get built and we will have our experiment!

Mark(s),

The Old Course is essentially configured in a way that provides 8 golf holes playing in two directions. With enough width this is very easy to accomplish, IMO with an open-minded membership and clever routing scheme.

I don't know what MK meant for sure, but I think the idea is to make holes that CAN be played in both directions, I don't think the idea is to do it on the same day. By having a reversible routing you would essentially have 2 golf courses, thus twice the variety.

Sounds like that is what he meant.  See Teton Reserve, Victor Idaho.
