In my two visits, no one ever mentioned that we could warm up with down Benham's red line.   

The first time there I went to the Pebble Beach driving range first.  Good thing as I had no idea how to get from there to CPC and some guys pointed me in the right direction!

The red line in the picture is incorrect.  You don't hit over the road on the driving range.   The two lighter colored areas just to the east of the road are the driving range tees.  Some players also hit from there to the practice green across the first fairway.

Slightly off this topic - do you hit over a hedge off the first tee?  Why is that there? I'm assuming because it's a public road...

You are correct, the red line does not define the driving range but it does define my initial aiming point on my first play at CPC.

Using RED in any chart or graph presentation, specifically for financial information, is a big no no, and likewise on my image defining the proper line to take on the first hole.

I had the pleasure of playing Cypress while out for the "World Pro-Am" at Pebble and Spyglass in the mid 80s. There was a member (the only other person we saw holding a club all day) hitting balls from the lighter area across the road. The pro suggested we hit a couple from the first tee to warm up, but be sure to keep it left of the member.
As a point of interest, a year or two earlier I was with a group at Innisbrook that made early (8:00am) tee times. The range opened at 8:00 as well so we couldn't hit balls. We ended up hitting 2-3 off the first to warm up there, too.

Now that we have this settled,I predict the Cypress Point Range will be in the fifth ten on next years GCA classic rankings.

You all know that I adore Cypress Point above everything else, but that opening tee shot is still the worst of any Top Ten (of any description) of anywhere around the world.

Ask yourself this:
Why try to protect a road with some bushes? I bet even woosy old me could easily hit a car through a single line of Leylandii...So what exactly are you 'protecting'?
If the gap was left open, would I not be better able to see/hear traffic on that incredibly busy highway (irony).
#1 TOC plays over a 'road' - no problem there.
Move the tee about thirty yards forward and take the road out of play...? Ooh, but technology has already made it too easy.
Even the Ladies play over the road. Nancy was delighted to make it, but had an even harder tee shot from lower down/closer to the 'HEDGE'
18 is too often cited as CPC's weak spot, but I genuinely believe #1 is way worse in terms of playability.

Bob/Stan, as fellows with waaaay more experience/knowledge than I, what say ye?
