The Annual Christmas Poem - 2008
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:39:09 AM »
O little Site called GCA
(“O Little Town of Bethlehem”)

(all names are fictional and do not represent real persons or events… ;))

O little site called GCA,
without we can’t get by
We’re in too deep, not needing sleep
as many threads go by;

Yet in thy dark days started
That Everlasting fight;
but on my screen, I have not seen
a Merion thread tonight!

For GCA was born of Ran
And gathered many a soul,
A few have gone, and so has John
when conflict took its toll.

Who are you guys really?
Asks the biggest thread on site
Back each week, the golf course geek
posting through the night.

How quickly, how fortunate
Tommy has returned!
he does impart, with all his heart
all that he has learned.

Ron Pritchard at Tom’s barn
said playability is silly,
but every week, it’s Cobbs Creek
from the nuts in Philly.

O fun debates of GCA
Phillipe thinks it’s shaping
the works a joke, unless by Doak
but I still think it’s routing

O good friends on the forum
I have few words left to say:
I’m freezen’, Best of the Season
to each and all today

Jay,

I've heard that one attributed to Igor Stravinsky, and I think it went, "Great artists steal, bad artists borrow."

In either case, I think Ian stole a "Short" this year, because his previous attempts were more in the "Long" and "Braid's Brawest" range of length.

No excuses either, Ian...this year on GCA should have provided enough ammunition for a novella.  ;D

I don't know if you're right, you might be.  RTJ, Jr. told me that in my interview with him.  As one of my lawyer buddies said once..."Jay, I like your form for that contract, where'd you get it?"

"You"

"There's nothing original anymore is there?" ;D

Merry Christmas, Mike :)

Jay,

RTJ Jr. is always stealing my lines.   ::)

I told him that one on the 7th green of the Shenandoah course at Turning Stone, believe it or not.

Man, at least he should get it right!   ;D

Merry Christmas!

Mike,

I had a darker vesion of this poem. I'm running out of ideas and poems that work. I still thought the first one worked the best... I can remember about half but I don't have a copy...

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the site
Not a poster was stirring, they’d called it a night.
The computers were off by the desk and the chair,
In hopes that the Flynn book soon would be there.

The lurkers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Sand Hills danced in their heads.
And Tommy is his ‘ascot”, and Ben in his cap,
Both had just settled in for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the site there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my computer to see what was the matter.
Away to the screen I made a quick dash,
To see the discussion and I was on like a flash.

This brand new discussion had started to grow
giving new lustre to the old threads below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a some very bold thoughts, and opinion so clear.

With a little more insight, so quick as he can
I knew in a moment it must be St Ran.
More rapid than eagles the posters they came
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Tom Paul! now, Cirba! now, Mucci and Disher!
On, Morrison! On, MacWood! on, on Childs and Dewer!
To the top of the site! to the top of the threads!
Now wake up! Wake up! And out of your beds!"

...at that point I'm stuck.

Thanks, Ian.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone. I'm on vacation next week - that's my present to everyone. :)
