If it's as dead as it looks, I wouldn't stand under any of those branches. :o  It is a cool looking tree though.

I bet it would be great firewood--looks dried and aged to perfection :D

What great shapes that tree makes !

Although in that first picture the lower branch looks like it's giving me the finger.

That looks a lot like a tree on a hole at Sea Ranch GL, northern CA....

But I don't think that's it... is it?

In any case at Sea Ranch the tree is very dead also... in fact it;s been a few years
since I've been there... wonder if said tree is still standing?

They are under review; I love them, but we'll see how they play and it's not my call anyway -- on the tee shot of the 3rd hole, Old Macdonald. It's supposed to be a Sahara hole, not a field goal, but the snags do look phenomenal and can be spotted from throughout the golf course.

The first photo is taken from the left center of the fairway just by the second tree; the second photo is taken from right fairway center looking back. The tee shot is from below left, with the straight snag on the right and the crooked snag to the left of the intended line of flight. They mark the apex of the dune and the tee shot crossing point, with the mid-line between them about a 160 yards carry from the back tee at an elevation of +20 feet from the tee.

Fantastic shapes,  hope they are kept.

Although the background shows how boring, dense, conifer, woodland is.

Brad--
Do the trees make #3 'less' of a Sahara?
after playing the preview loop yesterday 3 was the hole I kept thinking about.  I can only imagine the tee shot but the walk up unto that ridge and view it reveals is something special.  And although I don't think the hole is in any need of character, the trees add plenty and are a landmark through out the course, like you already said.  My vote is they should stay for sure.

Wow, I love them.  Maybe not the traditional Sahara, but it isn't suppose to an exact replica project, correct.

I think they are very unique and should be considered for the Old Mac logo actually.

It would be a shame to see a chainsaw take these down.

Why risk the liability? The wind can blow there, I assume?

Adam, those trees have some experience with the wind.

I'd vote to leave them, and they are obviously striking and even spooky but I truly have no idea of their short or long term viability, so I'd hate to see andy of the strategic options of any hole live or die on their existence.

Joe, Brad, and others; In all my many and growing-longer-in-the-tooth years, a wandering lifetime spent gathering memories in the majesty of the natural world........well, that snag..... is close to the pinnacle, for me at least, of tree form, texture, character and beauty.Iconic.Yes, possibly it seems an added complex element, being asked to drive through those goal posts, .........but just think of the history that tree has been sentinal to, the intensity of a hundred winters of wind, the sounds that it's simple standing there has offered.............and will offer to each of us as we walk into the majesty of this new links!  Imagine the nests and the eagles perched there, the gathering of crows in the night, the owls, gulls gathered against the storms offshore.....do you know how many pileated woodpeckers have taken up there, and will still??Think of that!  And then drop any notion, any talk or mere mention, of removal. When one stands there and puts a hand on that wind burnished surface, soft spruce polished into art, a hand against that surface that has faced countless western suns........consider!Think of the opportunity to be moved by beauty all who walk by will have.....a priceless game in a transcendent place, gilded by a chance to witness that stark form!!For what purpose that trumps all that would we consider it's removal a good thing??Think of what the poet would say.........think of what John Kavanaugh would say! (no, maybe not that!)That's all I got!  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!Tom

Please forgive the cramming together of words and thoughts in the above post!

They were all spread out, and perfectly punctuated and presented.

Then I tried to edit before posting, and something in the program went awry, and that mess is the result!

But the thought is there.  That snag is there....

Tom,

You're right, by the way.  The world's greatest golf course tree.

The hole name should be changed (although I realize it is not a reasonable request), to enshrine the sentinel duty that these trees have, and will continue, to provide over time.

The one on the right is a gnarly bastard isn't it? An amazing specimen for sure.
