Although I generally eat a little bit of turkey, it's my least favorite food of a traditional T-giving dinner.  Speaking of which, I just took a 22-pounder out of the oven and my husband is busy carving same.  I have another 24-pounder to cook tomorrow.  My favorite T-giving foods are the stuffing and several veggie dishes.

I love the concept of T-giving -- be grateful, eat and enjoy the company of family, friends and some football.

Whatever you're eating, enjoy a happy Thanksgiving!   :-*

I can't remember who it was, but there were several steak eaters who joined me (electronically) to celebrate with beef.

I rotate the steak dish around from year to year.  Tomorrow is just straight ahead porterhouse, medium rare.

Jay - you're right on. Not a big fan of the roasted turkey.

During years when family aren't with us, we just do marinated 16oz NY Strips on the grille.

However, I have to say I've become a big fan of Fried Turkey. Something about all that peanut oil - yum.

Once again, holler if you hate turkey.  I have my porterhouse steak halfway down my gullet.  Happy Thanksgiving, and have fun watching football, playing with the kids, and getting in some golf if possible.

This is some thread, Jay!  A dialogue about turkey morphs to a college football game men's restroom "encounter."  ::)

Thanks to Bill McBride for the "turducken" reference and many thanks to Matt Cohn for the photo.  How cool is that?  I had been thinking that it was a roll of some kind and now see that a whole chicken breast is layered with stuffing and then a duck breast, layered with stuffing and a turkey breast.  Although I like duck less than turkey, knowing it is a cajun creation, I would definitely be interested in trying it.  My guess that it has oyster and andouille sausage stuffing.  Whatever...it makes an interesting photo.   :P

RJ Daley ~ I grew up around Chicago, but have relocated to Maine via Seattle, Portland, Chicago, DC, Boston and NY.  My husband has 4 brothers and one sister.  When celebrating with his side of the family (spouses, children and his parents), the "immediate family" = 35 (14 adults and 21 children) and it doesn't take long to consume the 46# of turkey -- especially when the older children bring friends, etc.  We're eating around 5:30-ish and I needed a little wine-break from the bedlam.  Not to worry, there are no college football games going on in our area and I will definitely stay away from public men's rooms.  :o

It matters not what you choose to eat, I hope that each of you have a great day!

With or without a wee dram, St. Andy's any day of the week.  :P

Yes, that was definitely strange.  But it's OK, because it's always good to see Shivas on a thread :D

Bausch, you read my mind about the Porterhouse.  I typed that twice, but thought before I hit send:):)

...and I want them chop chop.

Chip, what do you use to marinate yours?  I threw some oregano and Italian spices and cayenne on it.  Next year I'll do coriander and cumin with mango salsa.  We had 16 people this year, 18 when one more pair of cousins came in, so then we had one for every hole on a golf course.

We had some different things this year.  Brother William!  Instead of sausage roll, we put the sausage roll filling - with lots of cheese - in a wonton.  That was cool.  Then we had tortilla soup for a first course.  Then it morphed back to Italian:  antipasto (pronounced "aunt-i-PAHST" ;D, then roasted reds with mozzarella (pronounced "moots-a-DELL" ;D and olives.  Then the traditional turkey and  trimmings (READ:  PORTERHOUSE!), my mom's candied yams and pineappple.

Then we hit the dessert TABLE.  That's right:  Table.  Cousin Teri had 12 pies, and we had birthday cake for my dad's 85th.  (2 pumpkin, 2 low-fat pumpkin, banana cream, blackberry, lemon merangue, pecan, low-fat lemon, chocolate mousse, low-fat chocolate mousse, and something I can't remember that little Baby Eddie stuck his finger in...)

We had a ball.  Hope you did too.

Jay,

I spoke with a friend earlier who says she has the butcher making up turchiduck.  I gather its sort of a cross between a stuffed pizza and ice cream cake roll , with layers of duck, chicken and turkey, each separated by stuffing.....  I had frankly never heard of it.

Turducken???? They are amazing! The duck fat cooks into the surrounding birds. I made one last weekend for a pot luck thing with friends, 23 pound turkey, 5 pound chicken, and a 4 pound duck.

I hope everyone had the meal they were hoping for, and observed the things they are thankful for.  Thanks for all the interesting descriptions of your favorite cuisine for this holiday.  I think that after reading the descriptions, I'll have to give the turducken a shot when it is my turn to host the family meal next time.

BTW, for you beefmasters, my golf friend Jesse the retired USDA vet and inspector says that mango is the best known natural tenderizer of beef.  So that mango sauce thing must have merit.  I think I'll put some in my bathwater and see if it will soften me up some...  ::) ;D

To any of you who THINK they don't like turkey, just give me a day or two notice and I will do a turkey for you that I would put money on that you will thoroughly enjoy. This year the Tom was 24# in order to feed the throng. It went on the Weber kettle grill at 7 a.m.(prep started at 5:30), and was removed at 1 p.m. After 6 hours of slow cooking over chunk charcoal, the turkey is unbelievably moist and so flavorful, that you'd have to be a whack job vegetarian( :o) to not enjoy it.

RJ,

The imagery of you soaking in a mango bath is almost enough to cancel out all that I am thankful for.... ;D

The Parrot

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a
bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's
mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently
saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could
think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he
yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the
parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hand,
grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then
suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the
freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said 'I
believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm
sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend
to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.'

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to
ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the
bird continued, 'May I ask what the turkey did?'

Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.

Tommy - ha, ha!

Joe - so THAT's how one cooks turkey, huh? Thanks, I've got to keep that in mind. (Glad that the Hancock clan is all well and happy.) Growing up, we all regretted that day we encouraged mom to cook more 'Canadian food' - it meant that we went from having a delicious thanksgiving of lasagna followed by lamb to a thanksgiving turkey instead. And god bless her, my mom is a wonderful cook when it comes to lasagna etc, but with turkey and stuffing it was like the old Woody Allen line: "She cooked everything in a food de-flavourizer".  The motto was: cook it until it's overcooked, and then cook it for another hour".

Update: Hawk fan says bathroom sex scandal "ruined my life"
STACI HUPP • shupp@dmreg.com • November 26, 2008

A Carroll woman who was caught having sex in the men's room at an Iowa Hawkeye football game in Minneapolis last weekend says she’d had so much wine before kickoff that she doesn’t remember walking into the restroom, the man she had sex with in a stall, or when the police opened the door.

This is incredible. I won't even go to the bathroom in the stall of the stadium...........
[/quote]

The last lines of the original story (from my newspaper, at http://www.twincities.com/ci_11075245?source=most_viewed) were classics:

"[University of Minnesota police chief Greg] Hestness assumed the woman was embarrassed about being caught: She initially gave a false name to officers and had to be identified by her husband before she was released.

"The man was attending the game with his girlfriend, according to police.

" 'It's a long ride back to Iowa,' Hestness said."
