Cool Augusta Picture

Life Magazine's photos are now being hosted by Google.  This is one of the 13th hole at Augusta during the 1952 Masters:

Sorry, it won't post in here, but click on the link and it will appear.

Also you can search google's Life portfolio for all their golf pictures at:

John,

Very cool pic although it looks more like 12 with that tee in the background and bunker in the front.

Kalen,  I think you're right.  My error.

One interesting thing is that if you do a search for "Pebble Beach" in the life photos you get a nice picture of 15 at Cypress:

Wow!  Its hard to imagine Augusta looking like a course rather than a garden these days.  I am knocked out by how different the presentation is than what I am used to seeing.

Sean,

The junkyard-looking, barbed wire fence in the photo of #12 at Augusta really jumped out at me!

Thanks for these links. Neat photos.

That's definitely 12

All you "new" rough at Augusta haters might want to take a good look at that photo. ;)

That barbed wire kept the ruffians at the adjacent Augusta Country Club out ;D

I agree that it has to be 12, but it's a very confusing image, at least to me, a non-scholar of Augusta National.

For one, it shows how it's not just the aesthetics of the hole that have changed -- it's the playing characteristics. Unless that guy at front right is a predecessor of Fred Couples, it appears that a ball used to be able to hang up on the front edge, even on the steeper side. And doesn't this photo show a lot more roll than this green has now?

To boot, the flag doesn't look like it says 12. More like 13 or even 15. Are we looking at its reverse side?

Could that picture of Augusta be the old version of #16?

The flag certainly doesn't look like a #12 to me...

And the tee box you see in the back is the old tee box for #6?

Chip,

I thought about that two.  But then that would put the 5th hole on the other side of that chain link fence, which doesn't make any sense.  If the picture is indeed at ANGC, then I can't see it being any other hole than 12.

Yes, it is definitely #6.  Have you guys noticed the odd "pop up box" that shows up if you put your mouse over the photo?

It says, "Typical terrain on Pine Valley Golf Course, where Masters Golf Tournament is being held."

Obviously the Masters was never played at Pine Valley.  I wonder who captioned the photo?

No! The old 16th had the riparian on the right. It was just a little tributary lookin thang, with a green that melted into it.

Jeff, That rough grass does not show the WIDTH of fairways, does it? As far as I can remember there was always longer grass feeding into Rae's Creek.

Pretty amazing how the '52 conditions were good enough for Snead, Palmer, Burke Jr., Nelson & Hogan.... but not good enough for anyone today - pro or otherwise.

Thank you John

The answer is visible if you flip the image and look in the lower left corner.

The photo is flipped, but when put reversed to normal, the plate on model says Beverly Hills Country Club.

Designed by Sr and Jr, I believe.

Jason,

Nice pics.

The opened up look of #2 is just awesome.

For some reason, the 14th green looks larger in that photo than the current green.  I know there are less trees around it then, but it still looks bigger to me.

Here is a photo of Herman Keiser hitting from the right side of #9 at Pine Valley.  In the distance you can see the green and with the trees cut down behind it, it certainly would have had a cool skyline look to it.
