Similar to recent previous threads, what course has the toughest stretch to start the back 9?  I would nominate Shinnecock Hills and Augusta National.

If you limit it to 2, Pasatiempo rears its head again.  But 12 is not all that difficult, so it fails here.

Shinnecock works most definitely.  I can't think of any tougher....

I agree with 10 and 12, but 11 is probably one of the easiest holes on the course.  I have made my fair share of doubles on 11, but relative to the rest of the course, it is not all that difficult and that is why I did not choose Oakmont for this topic.

Oh, please...Bethpage Black by a mile.  10 11 12 in a row are just brutal.  11 is the "breather" of the listed holes, but it probably has one of the four hardest greens on the Black.

How about Pebble 10 11 12, especially when fast, firm and breezy on the Monterey Peninsula?

Birkdale has a pretty strong opening to its back nine as well.

I second Bethpage. That 3 hole stretch is insanely difficult from the back tees. I can't even think of any other 3 hole back nine start that comes close.

Interestingly enough, the back 9 at Olympic Lake is similar to the front 9.

#10 is by no means a simple par and 11 and 12 are brutes with the tee shot on 12 being just flat out daunting from the new back tees.

Funny you would say that, I was thinking the same thing IF you duck hooked your tee shot on #12..........or maybe even just tugged it left a bit.

That's true.  Oakland Hills and WFW can't be any picnic either.  But yes, Oakmont is murder in any direction.

When the greens are really rolling and the pin is up on the left ridge of #10, I'll nominate #10 against any three holes.  I watched disaster after disaster unfold on that hole over the course of two rounds.  I'd bet our group's average score was a 7, and that's if you count pick-ups as a 6.

How about the back ridge on 11?  A putt from below the hole sure had better get up that last slope, or you'll be playing a chip shot from back near the tee.

The back nine at the new Nicklaus course at Promontory in Park City, UT starts off with a 536 yard par four that plays into the prevailing wind, followed by a 244 yard uphill par three over water, and then rolls to the 12th hole which is a 673 yard double dogleg par five that plays way downhill off the tee and then climbs back uphill to the green.  All of those holes play back into the prevailing wind; pretty brutal start to the back nine if you ask me.

This picture doesn't give you a great feel for the hole at all, but the green is not visible from the tee as you have to bust your drive to the top of a hill to get a view of the green and have a chance to put it on.  Water is left of the putting surface.




244 yard 11th, uphill, into the wind.  Tough.



3 shot par five that double doglegs and drops off a ton from the tee box.

Even at 8000+ yards I didn't think the length was too much at Promontory, the toughest thing for the members there are the undulations in the greens based on the stimp.  Very difficult for an amateur golfer.

I always thought Royal Colwood in Victoria had 3 tough holes to start the back.  They all played primarly into the wind as well.

12 is easily one of the hardest 4 pars I've played.

10, 11 and 12 at Aronimink are very demanding.

10 - Long par 4 to a generous fairway, but you need to get over a good sized hill 250 yards out to have anything less than a 6 iron in (for most of us mortals). Green fronted left with water and a very undulating complex.

11 - Long par 4 to an uphill green with the most severe slope of any on the course. Most of us should play to our handicap on this hole, but a big number looms depending primarily if you can stay below the pin on your approach.

12 - Long par 4 (beginning to see a theme here?) from an elevated tee but the hole still plays uphill somewhat. Strategic fairway bunkers require a precise tee shot. Slightly raised green with some severe runoff areas.
