Slightly OT - Texas Tech
« on: November 01, 2008, 10:42:24 PM »
Watching this really great football game tonight and thinking how they built a great golf course with Tom Doak and took a chance to bring in Bob Knight for basketball, I really have to congratulate Jerry Rawls and I'm sure many others and what they have done for Texas Tech.

If a Big 12 team is not in the national championship game it will be a travesty.

Like Herbstreit said, the BCS should have 4 big 12 teams in it.

The lick McCoy took, releasing that pass and getting broken in two and busted in the mouth showed he can really hang in there.

What a college football day!  (execpt that whole last 8 minutes of the Badger thing  ::) :-\ :-[ )

The best college football games this season have all involved the University of Texas.  Their games against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech have all been fantastic!  I agree though, if a Big 12 team is left out of the National Title game it will be too bad because they have played some fantastic football in that conference this season.  It is too bad the conference is so big and they don't play everyone at least once.

The college football season and deciding the National Championship are far from over.  ABC put a box up on TV with the craxy things that happend in the last month of the season and getting to the NCG and based on that there is a long way to go.  I too find it hard to believe that if the Big 12 has a one loss team (or an undefeated tem) at the end of the year that they will not be in the NCG.

As for all the best games involving Texas, they had one last week on ABC that was one of the great games this year. It did not involve 72 points of offense, but did feature two great defenses.  Also, If Penn State goes undefeated, I find it hard to believe that Joe Pa and his team will not be one of the sentimental choices to be in the NCG.  That would leave one spot to fill.

Kelly:

Jerry Rawls was a freshman basketball player, not a football player, so he had nothing to do with how those kids played.  However, his donation of $25 million to the business school, plus the $8 million for the golf course, did help the university a bit.

They've put a lot of money into new academic facilities as well.  Too bad that doesn't get as much attention as a football game.

I've always wondered about sports vs academics.  I went to a very good academic school with zero sports.   I wonder if that's hurt me career-wise?

--------------
But, that was a helluva football game.  Texas Tech plays a great pro-style game, which I love.    I hope they can eek their way up to the title game.

Too bad we don't have a playoff system!

It will be a travesty if USC gets into the championship game after getting beat by Oregon St. THey play no one else while the Big 12 and SEC beat each other up. SEC champ should play Big 12 champ and call it a night. Penn St plays no one either.

I don't watch a lot of college football, nor do I have a rooting interest for either team, but I did watch that game and it was thrilling.

Based on my time working at KSU, I can tell you that when the sports teams win, the donors come out of the woodwork.  Not all of those donations go to sports and the visibility of the University goes way up, so a winning team is a good thing for academics, too. Perhaps not as much as it should be, of course.

Tech has the reputation as pretty good (but not animal house type)  party school, and it looked like they wanted to start early!  That game was worth watching just to see a kick off from the 7 yard line!

None of this national championship stuff will ever get resolved until its fans vote with thier wallets to not partake in BCS games in any way, shape, or form.

Its alot to ask given the frenzied nature of football fans, but until then the greedy comissioners will have no incentive to go to a true playoff system that includes at least the top 8 teams.

There goes the east coast bias against any team from the west.  USC is probably the only team that could beat Texas Tech except for maybe Penn State.

The Florida State fans are pretty unhappy too.  Their star running back fumbled right before the goal line and FSU lost to Georgia Tech by 3 points.  They had made a terrific comeback, down 11 with 6 minutes to go.

These last few posts are exactly the madness that will only continues to worsen with the lack of a playoff.

Can you imagine something like this in the NFL? The Giants would have never even had a sniff at a championship, much less a "BCS type game" if they used the same lame rankings in the NFL

Don't they play Dee-Fense in the Big 12? Why all these high scores? Perhaps they should visit Beaver Stadium. ;D

I am a Mizzou fan who bleeds black and gold; but I have to state - That Big XII South is scary good!  Between Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas & Texas Tech, there is not a team in the country that would look forward to playing any one of these four.  The unfortunate thing is that they all have to play each other, and some of them will result in a diminished ranking.  Throw out the Big XII North, and the South is 100% the toughest conference this year.

Think how my poor Baylor Bears feel.Last week the 4th place team in our division(OU) was also 4th in the nation. And we don't get to play Baylor. By the way, have you seen what is left of OSU's T Boone gift of 160 million dollars worth of hedge fund stock?

Mike,

The original 165 million, which peaked at 402 million in July of this year was down to 125 million when Boone took it out of the hedge fund. He gave it back to OSU and kicked in an extra 63 million to bring it up to 188 million. Its still a good time to be a Cowboy. I just wish we were playing Texas Tech here in Stillwater next week.

Craig, I was under the impression that the 165 million peaked at 300 million, that T Boone would not allow a cash out(seems his control will reverse any write off he took),but instead the University used the stock as collateral for a 200 million loan.Margin calls have rendered the gift to have no value. Now the Univ has a one million a month interest obligation on the loan, still owes 200 mill in principle and has no assetts standing behind.Perhaps I have misunderstood, but my source is good.

I saw Florida give up 31 to Ole Miss and Alabama struggle with less than stellar competition...

Do you guys play defense in the Big 12?

I also recall a USC team losing to the Oregon State team Penn State absolutely dismantled.

I love when similar teams in the SEC or Big 12 play each other, it's attrition but in the Big Ten - it's terrible football. Big Ten teams play defense, as Florida learned against a mediocre Michigan team last year or as Tennessee learned in Tampa two years ago.

Guess what, THE Ohio State University is not the only Big Ten team - and Penn State takes care of its business - ask Jimmy Johnson or Herschel Walker.

Paterno has already had 4 undefeated teams not even get a nod for a National Championship game, including one of the greatest football teams of all time in 1994, (The QB for which is STILL playing UNDEFEATED Football in the NFL). It's looking likely like this may be the 5th, and to not get a shot to play in an MNC game because of some idiotic view of a conference due to one team's (that's not even in the picture) past failure is sad.

Kyle,

And what was Kerry Collins doing the past couple of years when he wasn't still playing "undefeated" football?  You really lost me with the Kerry Collins reference.  I mean come on, he is far from a great QB - serviceable yes, be a Trent Dilfer don't screw up the game so win can win yes, but great NO.

However, as I posted earlier, if PSU goes undefeated, they should get a shot.  Especially since they finally beat "THE" Ohio State University in the horseshoe (took them long enough).

Mike,

Here's the official comment from the OSU Athletic dept...

      http://www.okstate.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=1426&SPID=143&DB_OEM_ID=200&ATCLID=1612629

Supposedly the athletic dept now has $188 million in its checking account to take care of any bills they may need to cover to finish the West End Zone of the stadium.  There were rumors all over the various forums about the money being all gone, but Boone made it right.

I'm just amazed how many posts the economics of golf has received, really I share the honor with Shivas who continues to stir the pot.

As far as this thread, Texas Tech and their alumni have really built something there.  It similar to what John Arrillaga and others have done at Stanford and what T. Boone Pickens is trying to do at Oklahoma State.
