WHO SAID THIS? (A Golf Club Atlas Question)
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:58:19 PM »
Who said the following? (For those of you that know it, just a simple yes or no, and then IM me the answer!)(Trying to have some fun here!)

Quote
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, the new needs friends.

I cheated and googled it.  I saw the name and still didn't know who the heck it was.  So I had to dig deeper and u-tube the source.  I guess I'm really not with the new pop culture...  :-\ ::) :-[

Try not to give any clues, but I did think it was a pretty interesting quote that works well with a lot of the "critiquing" we do around here.

As for the rest of you, No Googling! Just a simple Yes or No! ;)

Tom,

It is indeed a great quote that applies to much of what we do around here. It also is a quote that has changed the way I have done a few things in my everyday life. The more I read it the more it has an impact on me.

Robert, I've got another one that I just recently from the book, Father Joe by Tony Hendra. I've been following it a lot lately and so far its working out. It was actually going to be my first post when I came back, and I just didn't post it, thinking that it might not go over.

Well, you asked for it, but first I have to say this about that......

In my transition from adult to senior adult, (my old age) I'm finding that wisdom seems to come a lot easier to me when I'm reading it from others. It's pretty hard for a person like me to live it; but certainly I do believe in it and try to gauge my life in some of the directions I feel spiritually (and I'm not referring directly to religion) enrich me. When I came back on last week; it wasn't a planned deal, I just happened to call Ran while driving down to San Diego on a beautiful Wednesday morning. It may have been the best day of the year for that matter, and weather wise it was neither too cold nor too hot. It was perfect and the conversation--my first with Ran in some time was great to touch bases with a friend, one of my favorites in Golf. His website has enriched my life over and over, but his friendship, well, make that friendships I've made here, well you can't pay that back enough.

You see, things weren't all that easy with my departure some months ago, and there was a lot of anger that just isn't good. It really isn't. But it took some advice from another friend close to this website and close to golf to slap me in the head and tell me, Hey, you should really make amends...." (with Ran) and I did something quite unique for me.

I listened.....

Well after this amazingly beautiful day in San Diego, I'm driving home and I'm just thinking about how great the day is, how great my life is, despite that we are not admitting to ourselves that we are in the next Great Depression, that still, I'm happy. I'm really, really happy. Suddenly, I get home, plop myself down in front of the computer, check my email, go see some of the latest drag racing rumblings and rumors and then just happen to click on this very website and see a post on poetry, where the starter of the thread is posting "poetry."

And that just about ruined my entire day...

It was then I realized just how much this website had regressed and who we celebrate; which for me, flies into the face of what this website is about. A lot of times the website celebrates mediocrity and even now, worse, bad poetry.  So, it was at this precise time I emailed Ran, Ben and others that it was time for me to come back, and here I am. So for the most part, you all have to live with me thanks to Jay Flemma's poetry.

Thanks Jay, Thanks a lot! Just when I thought I was out, you pulled me back in!

So, the excerpt from Hendra's book, Father Joe: The Man Who Saved My Soul:

Quote
"The advice I've gotten from every source, if I wanted to arrive at a similar apotheosis, was: listen.

Listen at every level: to the words, the emotions, the intent of the others. Be completely open to them, bring nothing preconceived or prepared to the moment. Listen and then speak only to what you've heard. Do that, and you can't go wrong."

Suddenly, Jay Flemma's poetry and his writing really isn't all that bad--NOT!!!!

That is just plain whack.  You came back to a golf architecture website inspired because of a deep feeling of animosity for a person and to throw mud to his poem or poetry about golf and a golf course ("the monster") which was parodied of St Georges and the Dragon (I know nothing about poetry) and you apparently set yourself up as a poetry critic to make disparaging critique.   Tommy, what level of English Lit did you achieve to be such an adamant critic?  And, you post something about being open to others, listen to others words and emotions, without preconceived ideas, and you do just the opposite.

It would all be credible if this was PoetryAtlas.com and as any discussion, you are perfectly entitled to you opinion of the quality of the submitted poem, or you had no bad history with the poet.  But those two things together spells vendetta, not critique.

I think this personality war is beneath both of you guys.

Tommy,

I am with RJ on this one, as you know.  While I may not care for any golf poetry, other than the poetry in motion of a Sam Snead golf swing, I hardly think Jay's post was bringing this website down. Nor do I think its your place to take up a crusade against it if Ran lets it be here.

Its like you think you are an emporeror around here or something....no wait.....well, I don't think you were meant to take that title seriously!

Dick,
Obviously the Hendra quote is correct. You'll only listen (or read) what you want to. After a certain point, you just won't listen. WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF THIS.

That's the point....
