Hickory Shafted Mashies
« on: June 23, 2003, 06:07:49 AM »
I know this isn't an architecture based topic but I was wondering if anyone out there knows much about or could direct me to someone who does know about antique clubs.
A family member recently passed away and I inherited a few old hickory shafted clubs that are in excellent condition and have some very interesting markings.  Any help would be appreciated and I apologize for the non-architecture topic.

Post a brief description of each and without doubt you will get a reply of what they may be worth...I recently put together a full set of playable hickories for much less money than anybody can believe.....If you don't want to tell us what you have just go to ebay and search for "hickory golf" or "wood golf" and see how you can get a bunch of amazing clubs for between $20 and $40 apiece.

Please just go out and hit them though it is not adviseable to hit range balls or off of mats....Titleist ProV1's are acceptable if you can not find Titleist balatas.   A hard ball will vibrate the shaft in manner that may cause damage...but damnit you owe it to the people who crafted them and the man who loved them to do what was intended and swing them in the direction of a ball until you make contact...its will send a rush from your hands to your brain that is so often wasted on the hurried discoveries of your youth...thats the real treasure you may have found.

The Mashie bears the stamp

     Hendry & Bishop                Matre
     Edinburgh                                     Grande
                                          Special
                                          Mashie
            made in Scotland
            warranteed Forged

The Niblick reads

        AG Spalding Bros.            symetric set

The Putter reads

     Wright & Ditson
       Berwyck

drop forged head

and lastly there is a wood without a face plate and it reads simply "spoon" on the sole plate.  The spalding and the hendry are both hickory shafted and have original leather grips and are in what I would deem excellent condition.  The putter and spoon are also in great shape but are metal shafted.  All four sticks are left handed.  Any info. would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
