Mike, I'm sure a bunch of college golf coaches grew up wanting to be tour players and ended up being college golf coaches!  A bit of a vagabond life but, personally, I think it would be challenging and entertaining employment.

Of course, I left teaching golf for building bridges!

But Bruce....does anyone grow up wanting to be a golf coach.....your answer sort of agrees with my theory....or the theory my golf group has come upon.....I know of plenty that hit upon it via pro golf route or whatever...but know of zero that grew up wanting to be a golf coach.....

Scary as it may be, I trust you and your friends analysis, so it must be true that no one has ever dreamed of being a college golf coach when they grow up.

Now, it's Paul's turn for a whacky thread.....

I can't say that it was something I considered growing up, but after spending 5 years as a high school golf coach (starting at 21) I had some thoughts about how one could possibly move up. I figured out pretty quickly that I probably had no shot at a major job anytime soon and gave up on that whole thought process pretty quickly.

Mike,

Does anyone really grow up wanting to become a shaper for new golf course construction?  I think that and coaching are both avenues someone can evolve into once they enter such a specific field.

I'm still waiting to discover what Joe Hancock actually does for a living by the way.....    ;D

Thanks, Paul!  I think selecting a routing and picking green sites and designing drainage is cool!  You guys probably think it's easy routing a course through a Florida cypress swamp but all I can think when I'm playing the finished product is how the heck do you start when it all looks the same.  For that matter, an even more difficult task might be routing Sand Hills or the Prairie Club with so many options.

Mike,
I know several young men and women whose interest in sports led them to
pursue degrees in sports management. For the most part I believe it's as Bruce suggested, but that doesn't mean there aren't individuals who decide early on to make the world of sport their profession, and find coaching to be their vocation.

During a round at Elie during the Buda Cup, the Cal Bears women's golf team showed up to play.  I would LOVE to coach that team!

Is Fred Funk the only college coach who's gone on major tour success?  He was the Maryland coach when my son went to golf camp in Virginia 20++ years ago.

The Illinois golf coach, Mike Small, seems to do fairly well when he plays in the PGA and other events.
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

Nope - don't want to be a college golf coach - but a high school golf coach - YES.

High school golf coach is my retirement plan.
