Non-Smoking Courses?
« on: October 17, 2008, 12:47:32 PM »
Anyone aware of any private-club courses than ban smoking? Not in the clubhouse,on the golf course itself.

The issue has come up at my place and I'm wondering if it's becoming common.

There are no municipal/county restrictions nor are there any unusually flammable surroundings.

I am not aware of any courses that have a non-smoking policy on the course.  Many don't allow any type of smoking at all in the clubhouse, locker rooms, card rooms, dining rooms or the bar grill lounge.  The only places I have seen it allowed is on the porch or open air areas like a pavilion.

Personally, I love the idea of no smoking on the golf course.  I hate it when I am playing hit a shot into a green and then walk up and see a cigarette just sitting on the edge of the green smoking.  What I don't like is that many smokers just toss the cigarette or cigar when they are done and it looks bad on the course.  It would be like me finishing a Snickers candy bar and tossing the wrapper on the collar of a green.

I would expect some really high end clubs like ANGC, Pine Valley, Cypress this is not allowed at all

No much changes over the years, but at least in Scotland we make a match out of the Smokers-Non-smokers. No surprise that the Smokers ran out of wind or should I say steam if we are talking about 1897.

I believe that some years ago ,when he was Chairman,Jack Stephens was asked if ANGC was planning to restrict smoking in the clubhouse. He reached in his pocket, pulled out a pack of Marlboros, and answered "no".

Pine Valley

I smoked on Pine Valley each time. Maybe it was just cool caddies letting me?

David,

I am glad the Ernie Ransome didn't see you.

at Harding Park I asked the cart girl if she had any cigars, her response was "this is a non-smoking facility".

I said "I don't mean for in the clubhouse, just want to have one out here on the course"...

...she said "the whole park is non-smoking, including the course" -- I could only laugh.

next time out I made sure to bring my own ;-)

cigarette butts are a nuisance everywhere.  I see people throw still lit cig butts on the ground all the time, whenever possible I say "hey, you dropped your cigarette" -- usually stops them in their tracks, but they never pick them up.

That's the case with all city owned courses in SF...no smoking.

I think the smoking restriction at PV is more for fear of fire than anything.  It wouldn't take much for hell to break loose, the surrounds are pine barrens with a ground cover of dead dry needles.

As I remember it.....

Pine Valley is non smoking because of Mr. Ransome's dislike of seeing smoker's trash all over the golf course.

There is nothing worse than dealing with Cigar fog while teeing off - it's disgusting.

I hope more courses institute a no smoking policy.

One of the worst aspects of golf in America.

Just throw in a fatty and try not to spit on the greens  ;D

I'm not and have never been a smoker, but what is the world coming to when people are prohibited from smoking *outside*?  I agree that leaving butts on the ground is incredibly lame, but the solution is to hammer people for littering, not to prohibit smoking.

I just read a permit application for a new course where the environmental engineers have suggested a smoking ban on certain holes, because of the possibility of setting fire to some shrubbery that is an important bird habitat.  A good idea, but very odd, and I wondered if there were other examples.

That kind of smoking ban I can understand along with California during fire season.

I'm curious if any private club has banned smoking without any "environmental" risk.Have any clubs banned on-course smoking simply because some members don't like it?

I've never understood what the connection is between cigar smoking and golf - especially noted among the 20 something crowd.  Every play with a cigar smoker? To me the odor and smoke is simply distasteful.  Hence it is more than just the litter.

I saw that in SoCal earlier this year as well.  At the U.S. Open at Torrey, they only allowed the players to smoke inside the ropes.  Nobody else was allowed.  The cops relented and let a handful of journalists smoke a butt here or there behind the trailers.  Other than that is was smoke free.

The edict about banning smoking at Pine Valley came about because Mr. Ransome was disgusted by the fact that some boor left a cigar butt in a bunker. Hence the decree, you can smoke in the club but not on the course.

Frankly, he should have banned smoking within the whole enclave.

I know, you are going to say, you goody two-shoes, you have never had a puff, true, but I did see my father die of bronchiectasis after seventy odd years of a three pack a day addiction.

Don't defend smoking to me.

As I mentioned I'm not a smoker (never have been), plus I've lost a family member to lung cancer and am not exactly enamored with others who smoke, so I'm not going to defend smoking.  Indeed, I poke fun of pro golfers who smoke.  But where everyone who smokes these days understands (or should understand) the risks associated with smoking, where there's no question that you can't harm others by smoking outside, and where you can deal with the incredibly boorish behavior of leaving butts around by targeting that practice, I just don't see the argument for banning smoking on the golf course.  I don't do it, and I prefer others don't do it around me, but to me that doesn't translate into a reason for prohibiting others from doing it.
