Wholeheartedly, agree about Olivas. I've already raved about the course a bit too much but bravo again to Forrest.
The combo of Rustic and Olivas does make Doakable day. Throw in Soule Park in nearby Ojai and you got a trifecta of affordable, quality courses near each other. Soule is a bit firmer (not counting the first two holes) than Olivas and despite some objectionable changes to placate the men's club, I find it comparable to Olivas on a Doak scale.
Olivas sister course, Buenavnetura, is much less appealing on nearly all fronts. It became my home course while Olivas was under construction but it's shortness and softness make it far less appealing. I use Buena as an alternative primarily for practice since it is often vacant since Olivas reopened.
One last comment of Olivas. On really hot days, or even firestorm times of the year like now, Olivas is a great alternative for those of us not fond of the heat. It's less than a mile from the ocean keeping its temperature significantly lower than Rustic or Soule. In the summer it's not unusual to have a 20+ degree difference between the inland Rustic or Soule when compared to Olivas with a refreshing ocean breeze.
