The US Senior Amateur finals

Philadelphia's Buddy Marucci is in the finals against New York's George Zahringer of the US Senior Amateur at Shady Oaks CC in Fort Worth Texas.

Zahringer is an old warhorse, many time Walker Cupper and a good guy but I'm pulling for Philly and Merion's Walker Cup captain Buddy Marucci.

Zahringer has won a USGA championship and Buddy hasn't. Buddy did get to the finals of the US Amateur at Newport in 1995 at the USGA's Centennial championship but he had the championship stolen from him on the 36th hole by his opponent who knocked his approach shot about two feet on the last hole and won it there.

What was that guy's name? It sounded a bit like a wild animal in the trees or something. What the hell did he ever do before or since to deserve to steal that 1995 championship from Philly's Buddy Marucci?

Zahringer beat a guy who was the 17 time club champion at Shady Oaks in the semi's.

BUMMER! 

I'm calling Pat Mucci right now to see if he can call down there and get the USGA to let Maruch lay a couple or three stymies on Zahringer! That late in the match I think Buddy might need to apply some serious ball blocking "defensive" strategy to this one!

I watched both George and Buddy play at the recent US Mid-Am held at the Milwaukee Country Club. Neither made it through qualifying play, however, for the match-play portion of the tournament.

Tom,

For many years Roger Lapham held a four day tournament on the Peninsula called The Fallen Angels. It was played over Cypress, Pebble and Spyglass. There was a dinner function every night at the club and some local restaurants. The contestants were from all over the place with a strong contingent from Europe.

Lapham chose the two man/women teams using a wonderful system.
Four day best ball tourney, all putts to be holed and at the  end of the day the team eliminated the four WORST scores on the card. George Zahringer  and his partner won going away.

The following year George was saddled with Le Comte de Rothschild, a 36 handicapper, who couldn't play to it and came in last.

But what a player.

My club held the Senior Amateur a few years ago...what a great tournament.  These men are a true testament to amateur golf and the benefits of good health.  Helping at the tournament was a real pleasure.  Congrats to both for making it this far.

The both of them are probably the two steadiest players I've ever seen----eg just remarkably good course managers, Buddy being the best I ever saw in an all around sense and day in and day out. But it looks like if he's gonna take this one he better kick it into overdrive, if he has one, and like real soon.  ;)

I just checked the USGA site and it said Marucci was One Up with One to Play

I was at Shady Oaks last week and all of the smart money was on Simson, who got eliminated in the quarterfinals, I believe.  Marucci is a real grinder and he will be a very popular U.S.G.A. winner.  The Senior Am is a spectacular event and we're looking forward to hosting it at Beverly next year.

Last year Trip Kuehne won the Mid-Am, this year Buddy wins the Senior, does that mean that Steve Scott is the odds on favorite to win the US Open next year ( I assume he is still a pro.)

Glad to see a member of the US Mid-Amateur Committee win a USGA Championship.  Congrats to Buddy.

I remember reading a Joe Logan article last year and I think it said Steve Scott is an assistant pro at Hidden Creek.

Wow, that's just terrific!!

Congratulations George! That's George "Buddy" Marucci. And to you too George Zahringer, another good championship run in your long distinguished USGA championship career. Buddy, this raises you to "Midi-Legend" status on the rolls of The Philadelpia Syndrome Society, and just think of all the championship golf ahead of you on your way to perhaps Grand Philly Syndrome Society Wizard someday (representing Merion G.C. of course). There will be a party in your honor in the Grand Catacomb of the Philly Syndrome Society deep below the Merion clubhouse in a month or so. As usual no outsiders allowed, and remember our motto----"We Protect Our LEGENDS At All Costs". Your rising star is in safe hands now in Ardmore, Pa, next to the City of Brotherly Love.

Really a tremendous accomplishment and tip of the hat to Buddy. An title like this doesn't come without a significant amount of work and sacrifice. I further understand that he won't be able to defend next year as he'll be captain of the US Walker cup team matches at Merion!

Jack - That is my understanding from the press release I read ...

Marucci, the captain of the victorious 2007 USA Walker Cup team, will be unable to defend his title next year at The Beverly Club in Chicago, Ill. He will instead be at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., as the returning captain of the 2009 USA Walker Cup squad. The two USGA championships begin play on the same weekend.

Buddy Marucci is the honored speaker at tonight's dinner following the Robert T. Jones Memorial Tournament at Merion East.  It should be an especially warm reception for him as he returns to Ardmore as a USGA champion.  I hope he was wearing a Merion cap to go with that Pine Valley shirt in the finals  ;)

Just cool it and don't worry about that for now. We'll see if we can get Buddy to defend his championship at Beverly and Wayne Morrison to lead his Walker Cup team for him at Merion. There may even be a win/win deal in this because if Buddy's Walker Cup team members like Wayne they may even agree to show him how to hit a driver!

There is always a lot of coverage and discussion about what in the bag for pros. Curious what are the bags like for top tier Am's such as these two.

         What a splendid idea regarding the Buddy for Wayne swap. Given the depth of the available college kids for next years team,the USA should win despite anything Wayne could do, right or wrong. As far as the driver comment, I shall throw no stones.
  As far as what a Senior Am contestant would have in the bag, the most probable items would be Advil, denture adhesive, and Cialis/Viagra because you never know when the moment is right!

Your tip worked really well...on the range that is.  I'm sensing a comeback. 

Jack,

I don't think I would screw up our team too badly in case Buddy wants to defend.  I saw some of the potential Walker Cup players from GB&I play Merion a week or so ago.  They are amazing talents.  Apparently some of them just may be giving the pro tour a shot between now and the Walker Cup.
