Is this one of the most underrated courses in the US ? If so why or why not ?

What are your thoughts on this Dick Wilson beauty?

It would help a lot if you or someone else would just do a search of this website on this subject and add your post to one of the back page threads. This golf course has been discussed on here plenty in the past and there were some pretty edifying discussions on it.

I tried the search function on this site and I tried the advanced search function on Google, however, I still can not find any prior discussions per this course.

I am unfamiliar with this course and if anyone can locate the prior discussions of this course on this site, I would appreciate a link.

Thank you.

Bill, Ben Hogan once declared it to be the finest flat course in the world and it has been ranked high ever since.  Which is why it fails Kirk's 'underrated' test.

Of those who are familiar with both courses/clubs, compare Pine Tree with its neighbor, the CC of Florida... ???

TEPaul,

I did use the search function prior to posting and I only found 30 total responses. Many of which where directed toward the elevator, Charlie and some of the renovations on the bunkering. Hardly any GCA topics which is why I asked the question.

Did you try the Search function at the top of the page?  I just did and got 26 pages of results... granted many were for "pine trees", but you'll be able to uncover some info for sure.  Hope this helps.

Ben Hogan and Sam Snead liked the course. It's now a low profile club and doesn't host a pro event so it gets no publicity.

Steve,

That's a true story.
Both Snead and I believe either Tutweilier (sp?)or Connel (sp?) have their names listed as club champ that year.

Another year (1998 ?) another Pro entered and won, but, they only listed his name on the championship board and not the amateur he defeated in the Match play final.

A short while ago, out of about 300 members, with respect to handicaps, the club had, 56 4 or better, 20 2 or better and 10 0 or better.

While it's a flat golf course, all of the greens are elevated and extremely well bunkered.  The golf course also enjoys good breezes, mostly from the southeast, and the club strives for great golf course conditions.

PM,

I noticed another name on the club champ board. ;)

Also, on some vintage 2006 PineTree discussions, I noticed that there where some concerns with the re-do on the bunker complexes. I thought the bunkers where exceptional and the quality of the sand without peer. This was in May of 2007.

Lastly, I remember hearing a story about Snead and a wager concerning the long tee box on 16 ?
Can't for the life of me recall. Can you ?

What exactly did Hogan mean by saying that PT "was the finest flat course?"  Is that like Gary Player saying "It is the finest course of its type I have played?"
I played Pine Tree many years ago and found it demanding with great greens but the terrain was a bit boring.

I agree with Tommy........    it's a nice club and when I played it the course was in great shape,  but you spend your whole round looking for SOMETHING really good....   and all you can come up with is that the greens are excellent and elevated to create some interest.  Hard to believe it is considered Dick Wilson's finest work.  There are so many better courses in Florida now.  No way it ranks in a top whatever list.

Wayne,

maybe it is considered his best work because so much was done with so little basic material.

It's surely in the top five that I've played in Florida.  They did a great job with building the push-up greens and with avoiding the usual Florida abundance of cape holes over retention ponds.  It's a challenging, enjoyable golf course and the membership is quite lively as compared to some of the "God's waiting rooms" that I've experienced in the Gator State.

Terry-  maybe you need to get out more.  I'm from Calif. and I've played a bunch of better Florida courses........ Seminole,  Old Memorial, World Woods,  Black Diamond, Calusa Pines, TPC Sawgrass, Pablo Creek, Bear's Best,  Jupiter Hills,  even Sawgrass CC.

Pine Tree is Top 5 in FL-A standout golf course with a very good golfing memberhsip. I could play there everyday. i think that Pine tree is better than almost anything Florida has to offer and has stood the test of time, as well.  Bob Murphy and Karrie Webb are members. When I was there, Steve Scott and his wife were there also, I believe members. Steve is now a pro at Canoe Brook, I believe.

If you had to spend your whole round looking for something really good, you must not have started off on the 1st hole, which usually plays into a pretty good prevailing wind from the southeast.

The dogleg nature of the hole along with the diagonal, exceptionally bunkered green make it better than a "good" hole.

# 12, # 13 and # 14 are spectacular as is # 18.

I'll leave # 4, # 5, # 7 and # 8 out of the discussion for now.

Did you tee off at Midnight ? ;D

and all you can come up with is that the greens are excellent and elevated to create some interest.

Then, your powers of observation and appreciation for good architecture are lacking, if not completely AWOL.

Hard to believe it is considered Dick Wilson's finest work.

"So Many" connotes a rather large collection.
Could you quantify "so many" ?
100 ?  50 ?  25 ? 5 ?

Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel, Carrie Webb, Jo Ann Carner and George Burns are/were members.

Anyone find it unusual the course was remodeled 3 times in 15 years?

Must be Comittee run-seems a new architect is hired whenever comittees change?
Interesting that it dropped steadily ever year on the lists, and more dramatically after the remodeling jobs.
