Architects, do you route a golf through through or over the land?

Bogey:

I think it depends on the land.

Semantics-wise, though, I route a golf course on the ground.

Mr. Bogey:

One could interprete routing a course 'through' the woodlands if it is heavily treed, but I think the more talented architects look past the trees and always consider the ground plane as the ultimate element they work with and place their routing upon it.  There will of course be some situations where even the 'best' architects must cut through a particular hillside or dune in sacrifice, to achieve the best overall routing.

In topo terms, TD once said you route like you walk.  Another analogy which suggests "through" vs "over" is to route like an engineer would route a road or railroad, which have similar vertical constraints to golf (on the uphill side) - follow the contours rather than crossing them.  While there are numerous exceptions, following the contours usually works out better than crossing over them (unless very gentle)

Depends on whether you're in the golf business or the cart rental business.

Are there such thing as "walking courses only" any more?

There are a few walking only courses.

However, based on speed of play, whether riding or walking, I think there is a renewed emphasis on getting tees and greens closer together that make a course more walkable.

I always figured it would be those people mover things you sometimes see policemen use - vertical stands with motors.  I think they are light enough to preclude cart paths, but could be wrong.

They make those now with a place for a golf bag on the side, $3500 or so.
