Conde Nast Traveler Best Course Design
« on: August 22, 2008, 11:56:39 AM »
Condé Nast Traveler magazine has their Golf Poll 2008 where they rated the following courses best in design:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Bandon, Oregon
Falling Rock at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Farmington, Pennsylvania
Four Seasons Resort, Punta Mita, Mexico
Mauna Lani Resort, Big Island, Hawaii
Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach, Florida
Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Maui, Hawaii
Westin Resort & Spa, Los Cabos, Mexico
Westin Turnberry Resort, Ayrshire, Scotland

I might understand Bandon and Turnberry getting their "100" mark, but when you consider that The Old Course only scored a 91.9, what do y'all make of it?  Have you even heard of some of these other courses that rated "100" in design?

I think Kiawah's Ocean Course should have made the list.

Mike,

This looks more like a "My Favorite list of Golf Resorts to hang out at on the company's dime"

What the HECK do they mean by Wilea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa? What course? Wailea Golf Club? Makena?

Sounds like some reporter at Conde Nast just got some sweet comps at choice locations...

Site says methodology was:

Design of course:  20%
Golf staff & service 20%
Rooms                    15%
Resort service        15%
Food/Dining           15%
Activities                 15%

Only resorts that got the minimum requirement for total score were included.

I assume the 'best design' courses were then chosen from that main list.

Basically, who cares?

The Ocean Course only got a 93.0 under "Design of Course"

"We tabulated the responses of 2,805 Condé Nast Traveler readers
who were asked to evaluate 477 golf resorts that they had visited in the past three years.
Properties were rated on six criteria—Design of Courses (20 percent of score), Golf Staff & Service (20 percent),
Rooms (15 percent), Resort Service (15 percent), Food/Dining (15 percent), and Activities/Facilities (15 percent)—
using a five-point scale: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor. Each score represents the percentage of
respondents who rated a particular feature excellent or very good. Only properties that received a required
minimum number of responses were included in these rankings."

-----------
Apparently, these course rankings are only for the course.

We really are out of touch with the golfing public, aren't we :)

Dan... Still does not account for the fact that Westin Los Cabos has no golf component... in fact their golf offering is managed by our operation which is some 20 minutes off property.

The list is WAY out of date and must be considering the old El Dorado course that was/is adjacent to Westin but now an ultra private Discovery Land project after removing all oceanfront holes and developing this land. Still a decent course... but has zero to do with Westin Los Cabos.

Conde Nast still concerns itself with bells and whistles.  While I like Nemacolin alot, I dont know it deserves scores quite that high.

Calling Cary L:  your opinion on Ritz Carlton?

As someone who used to work for CNT, I can say their polling for travel info is good but golf is a joke.  They should leave it to the golf pubs.  Most of their readers are not avid golfers and thus you get mostly resort courses listed as favorites.  If I'm going to the Big Island in Hawaii, I want to know how to get on Nanea and will skip Mauna Lani. I did get to play Nanea btw. :)
