Chip,

If you were a politician you'd be excoriated for one of the biggest flip-flops ever.

Agreed. :D

However, I do think that a course like Merion shows its full colors after a few plays. Especially the middle stretch.....

I think many who profess to love The Old Course at St. Andrews have had a similar experience as Chip has with Merion.

Those bunkers in the rough look a bit odd, especially the 2nd bunker.  Perhaps I'm missing something . . .

Tim - you'd be surprised how much that bunker is in play.  15 has a really cool tee shot that stikes fear into a guy that hooks the ball.  OB on the left, heavy rough, trees, and bunkers on the right.

That bunker is definitely in play.  I think it's a great exception to the rule of the thumb that bunkers in the rough aren't usually a good idea.

Dan

Why is that?  How is the bunker effectiveness reduced if the fairway is taken back to meet the bunker?

Sean,
good question...   I guess I was repeating the "company line".

You're right - Pine Valley, for example, has a lot of effective bunkers off the fairway.

Dan

Despite my difficulties with the unmentionables at Merion, I found it to be a great day out.  My only real beef was the separation of bunkering from the fairway.  So far as I can recall.  The bunker on #5 was the only proper fairway bunker on the course.  I know which I prefer!

BTW  Isn't that the Redan (a huh) in the back ground?
