Rhode Island Golf
« on: July 11, 2008, 12:01:48 PM »
I will be going back home (Central Mass.) for 10 days in August, which will include 5 days on the south coast of Rhode Island.  I know there are some strong old (mainly Ross) and new private clubs throughout the Ocean State, but appears solid public course options are limited outside of Newport National and Triggs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks-
Andy

Newport National is pretty solid for a public course in New England.

Andy,

Spend lots of time at Newport National and you will not be dissapointed.

Shennecosset on the CT shore could also be an option depending if you are on that side of Narragansett bay.

On the value scale, Green Valley in Middletown/Newport is good basic golf. Nothing special architectually. Montaup is better but they are busy in the morning with member play.

If you like lowkey plain jane New England 9 holers with a great atmosphere and great views onto and off the bridges, try Jamestown.

Even if you can't get on the drive down to Sakonnet in Little Compton is worth the trip and you can see most of the course.

Andy..Newport National is excellent and reasonable for locals.  If you have a local address to use it will be $65 from Monday thru Wednesday.  They are also offering email specials about one time per month for a select day with $55 greens fee.  Worth getting on their email list for this.  Without hesitation the best public in Rhode Island and one of New England's best.

Triggs is also quite good Ross.  The local color/atmosphere of the course is entertaining if you bring the right attitude with you.  Quite annoying if not.

Shenny may be as close depending where you are on the south coast.  Comparable to Triggs with more of an open, links feel.

Would also recommend Montaup but would avoid Green Valley.  Price is relatively high for mundane golf.

Richmond is in the South County area.  Early Silva/Mungeam.  Too many trees but if it's close can do easily do worse.

Just to clarify -  will be in Bonnet Shores/Narragansett area.    Thanks for the suggestions - I was not too keen on dropping $125-$150 on multiple days at Newport Natl but would like to get up there once.

FYI...Shenny will be about 45 minutes or a bit more.  Triggs a few minutes less.

Jamestown is a fun 9 holes.  Built in the 1890's.  Guy who runs it has done a great job getting it in shape but unfortunately has 'played' with the course.  Seems to think chocolate drops should be added , for example, despite none being in the original design.  It's easy but enjoyable.  Check it out if you're on your way to Newport as it's literally one minute from the bridge.  Be forewarned tho it can be slow.

Again get on the Newport National email list which is good whether you're local or not.
