Obviously, I'm going to have a soft spot in my heart for three of Tom Doak's courses:

Stone Eagle
Pacific Dunes
Ballyneal

Tom melds strategic interest together with seamless transitions to create a most artistic playing field.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as one gains experience golfing, it is the "shot values" which lend special beauty to a golf course.

Two Tom Fazio courses catch my eye these days:

Martis Camp
Wade Hampton

My personal top 2 are:

1. Arcadia Bluffs.. Great water (Lake Michigan) views from every hole but one.. Several holes play right next to the water.
2. Stone Eagle- Sheer elevation compared to everything else around it..  Some tee boxes you can see into the desert for miles.  Also, the contrast between the perfect green fairways and then the rocky surroundings.

It definetly different and eye catching. I found it amazing that on the web site the architect wasn´t identified,  thus leading me to leave out the big branding names but it looks to have a Fazio flavor...could the archie be an X of Fazio. Must have had a pretty healthy budget also to truck in some dirt. Love the movement though, they had a good shaper that was in to detail.

Matt would likely know the details, but I believe WC was more or less designed and built by a relative novice.

My picks:

1. Cypress Point
2. Pebble Beach
3. Sand Hills
4. Northland C.C.
5. Black Mesa
6. Coeur d'Alene

I've been to Banff, but didn't play the course. That would certainly have made the list, too.

I don't think they are the same.
Stunningly Beautiful is the last scene in Turandot with Pavarotti singing Nussen Dorma.
Achingly Beautiful is Patsy Cline singing Faded Love.  ;D

I'll take a shot at that one, for my own tastes:

Stunningly: mountains and oceansides.

Achingly: tumbling linkslands and parklands.

Just got back from Banff. It has to be on any such list.

It also happens to be one heck of a golf course.

Pinehurst #2 from the porch of the clubhouse.

Riviera from the Sam Snead room.

Ballyneal with a mirage of an ocean in the background.

The Chicago skyline from Beverly.

Horse riders on the hills surrounding Rustic.

Riviera from the Sam Snead room.

Yup.

Not quite the Sam Snead room, but I stayed a few doors down last year.  The view from my room almost brought a tear to my eye before I even set foot on the course.

Sorry about the size of the pic.

Matt,

That is a better view.  Do they name all the rooms because the Ben Hogan room was across the hall from mine?

John,

Not all the rooms are named and my room was one of the anonymous ones.

The Hogan room, Snead room and Walt Disney room were all relatively close by, as was the Dean Martin room.  As I'm sure you remember, you could spend an hour just walking the halls there and looking at the old photos and soaking up the history.

Just a remarkable place.

I'm a little bit surprised mountain golf has gotten so little mention:

As Tim Taylor says:  how about Banff Springs?

My list (only courses I've played):

Pebble
Banff
Kingsbarns
Grandfather
Wade Hampton
Diamond Creek
Mauna Kea

Wolf Creek looks beautiful to me.  I'll accept "stunningly."  Who cares how it got that way?  Who cares if the sprinkler can is always filled?  I like Bandon, I like Whistling, I like Shanty Creek and Arcadia and Tullymore...I like Taconic, Webhannet, Putterham and LaFayette Hills...When the sun is low, the mist a-rising, the birds a-chirping and the putts a-dropping, any golf course is stunningly beautiful for me, my colleagues.

Within the last year here on GCA.com, someone profiled a new course in S. Africa that looked pretty stunning.  Lots of holes perched on cliffs that soared hundreds of feet over the ocean.  Can't recall the name of the course or much else about it.

Pinnacle Point.

Bamburgh Castle is fairly spectacular.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Just fiddling around with some old photos, seems like a good excuse to post a few:

Cypress Point

Sand Hills

Royal St Georges

Not too tough on the eye, these three. More to come...

Perhaps not the most beautiful courses in the world, but still lovely to behold:

Red Sky Ranch

Hankley Common

Royal Ashdown Forest
