"The Thrill of Victory And The Agony of Defeat...

...the human drama of athletic competition...this is ABC's Wide World of Sports." Anyone who grew up with those words and Jim McKay will be saddened by his passing.

Not only was Jim's name a "union of one" with WWS, but seldom is anyone more synonymous with an event than McKay was to the Olympics. The opinion would be unanimous that during his 24 years as the Olympics anchor, McKay WAS the Olympics.

The greatness of Jim McKay is that other than Munich, I never think of him being the story or the center of attention.  He always allowed the story to take center stage.

Secondly, he seemed as though what he did was so minimal, yet no other TV sports broadcaster since can come close to the excellence of Jim McKay.

I grew up with Jim graceful, highbrow, but humble work.  I wish ESPN wouldn't hitch their broadcast solely to Munich because he was so much more than that and so much more happy and educational, rather than just somebody who did the hostage crisis.

I'll miss him  terribly.  He was one of the greatest.  The craft gets darker and darker by the day because instead of lionizing kind men who championed all that is noble in sports now its all scowling and put downs.  It's a black day for us all...a great light has gone out.
