Chick Evans - The Biarritz

This is from a 1926 Golf Illustrated article authored by Chick Evans where he describes improvements made to the No. 3 Course at White Sulpher Springs.

The tenth is considered one of the best driving holes on the course. It is
an adaptation of the Biarritz hole in France, meaning an extremely narrow
entrance to a well-trapped green.

Interesting that he mentions neither a heroic carry nor a trench in the green.

Perhaps that's why he's best know for caddie scholarships and a great amateur career rather than his golf architecture expertise!

"He played golf?" You are of course jesting. Chick being the first person to win both the US Open and Amateur in the same year (1916).

Different girl, Dan. Judy was very healthy; she drank fresh fruit smoothies. I was the sick one... then and now, the Biarritz is my favourite type of template hole, or at least amongst my Top Ten favourites. Judy never understood the specificity of my likes....

But to get this back on topic (sorry)...the French have a different name for Huntington's Corea.  That's just what they're like, i.e. no matter how politely you ask them something, they insist on answering you in a completely different language

Which is to say, I'm not sure what the French mean by "Biarritz", but I'm guessing it doesn't involve any kind of "heroic carry"

I know a guy named Chick that went hunting in Korea. He has two sons. One Halloween one decided to go dressed as a Saltine Cracker. The other son said, "what should I go as?" His father said, "be a Ritz."

And then they upped the dosage of my medication.
