Not to worry about the Gunners.... their rough patch started with Eduardo's broken leg. He is an instinctive finisher, the only one up front who'd shoot from anywhere. They're a very young side, and there's a history of players leaving who never again match their North London form (Henry being the latest in a long line of examples). Wenger has funds available for this summer's transfer market as he sees fit.

All that notwithstanding, congrats to Sir Alex on another fine top finish.     "Yank Gooner" (jKinney)

Puke.  Not that I'd be any happier had Chelsea won.  (Go Arsenal!).

In any event, penalties are the worst way to decide a major finals.  What an awful end to a fairly boring match.

Couldn't agree more.

GO ARSENAL!

But hey, I came about as close as one can to my wish for both teams to lose.

My God. What football do you normally watch? The Dog and Duck beating the Red Lion 9-8 (after being 8-5 down with 10 minutes to play) in the East London Pub League (Hackney Marshes Pitch 5 South)?  ;D

As a neutral (who admittedly can't stand Man U) it was a fantastic game. Goals, great saves, open play, shots hitting the post/bar, minor fisticuffs, a sending off and a dramatic penalty miss (English defenders and penalty shot outs don't mix). The only thing missing was Ronaldo's miss costing United the cup. Now that would have been the icing on the cake.

You need to watch a tape of the 3-3 Classico between Real Madrid and Barcelona last year.

Jon - that was a GREAT post that has me still chuckling.

I think you're right - it was a pretty damn good match.  I was agreeing more with the conclusion... I don't like any big matches settled by spot kicks (though I sure as hell don't have any ideas for a better way to do it!) but the main thing is the final result was joyless for me.  I can't muster any love for ManU.

I think Bob's right also... if it was scored a la boxing it might have been stopped.  Drogba's slap would have been the final blow.

Yes, it was a great game and only the most bilious of Chelsea/Arsenal/Man City/Liverpool/etc./etc. supporters can disagree.  BTW, Jon, are you related to Boris Johnson (aka Hizzoner)?

I'm not as knowledgeable about football (soccer) as many, but I enjoy watching big sporting events so I caught a good amount of the match yesterday.  I found the first half quite enjoyable and ManU clearly looked like the better team.  Chelsea was very fortunate to be tied at half.  I missed most of the second half so I'm not sure what happened there.

A question:  what was Ronaldo doing with his penalty kick?  Does that feinting tactic work often?  It seems like the better way to go is to drive the ball hard.  Just curious.

Really?  You all found that enjoyable?  Even the announcer noted that the play was subdued and neither side really found its A game.

In any event, I found the game was very little creativity at all, just pass, pass, shoot, run.  Lampard and Harrick may be technically savy, but nobody is going to confuse them for a Brazillian.

Tim - Chelsea fairly dominated the second half.  And re the penalty kick, some do try that feinting move Ronaldo does.. it usually does work... but it does take a fairly simple shot and turn it into a complex exercise.  That being said, driving it hard doesn't always work either - the keeper can guess correctly - ask Nicolas Anelka.

Agreed that neither side had their 'A' game but the match was better for it. It was a good old fashioned English blood and guts game. Rather that than the defensive snorefest that Milan and Juventus served up a few years ago.

Rich

I never noticed that Jesse looks like Boris before.

Strangely enough, many years ago when the new mayor was only a minor columnist on the Daily Telegraph, a tramp came up to me and asked me if I was Boris? I didn't know what to be more surprised about. That I looked liked Boris Johnson (we both have blonde hair I suppose) or that the tramp read the Torygraph.

Having just returned from Moscow - sans sleep for 48 hours - I'm totally dejected.

I can handle despair, us Chelsea fans are used to it, but it's the hope that kills you, and we had that hope yesterday.

I thought it was a superb match, Man U by far the better team in the first half, with Chelsea dominating the second half and extra time.

There are plenty of accusations flying around at the officials at the moment, and I'm sure a nice bottle of red wine has been sent to the referee by the Man U management!

Would that be anything to do with the fact that the players are underskilled/ overpaid and they don't really care whether they win or not as they jump in their ferrari and head for the mansion. ;D

The game was so much better and tougher when you had some 'home grown' talent playing for the teams where they grew up. Just an observation.

Well, yesterday's Champions League final pitted perhaps the two most even sides ever to face each other in the competition's history.  There probably isn't more than a point's worth of difference between the sides over the course of a campaign.  The kind of match we saw yesterday was almost guaranteed because of the near extreme familiarity that both sides have with each other (if it were Liverpool, then it would be psycho extreme familiarity over the past 4 seasons).  Needless to say, after Lamps scored in the 45th, from that moment on, I found it difficult to breathe.

Of all of Chelsea's players to miss from the spot, the player I wouldn't want to see miss was JT.  JT is what's right with football, plays the game the right way (and hard), supports the attack, plays through some tough injuries and is a fantastic captain for the blues.  Obviously, if J Cole, A Cole, le sulk (well, he missed) or Drogba missed, that would have made me happy.  To have that happen to JT is simply cruel.

I think Utd created far more chances, and, save for some profilgacy in front of goal from Carrick and Tevez and the heroics of JT in AET, it really wouldn't have mattered in the 2d half.  Remember, the blues only had 1 shot on goal from 24.  Also, their lack of discipline (they jointly led the prem in sending offs with Blackburn) cost them in the end.

As to a solution to replacing spot kicks to decide these matters, I have long supported reducing both sides by 1 when going into AET to expand the pitch, open up more play, etc.  Maybe in the 2d AET session, reduce by another player, but both reduced players would be eligible for spot kick duty at the end of AET.

But, in the end, the Busby Babes have been given quite the gift and must still be partying in the great beyond!!

Right now, it just sounds so great:  Champions of England, Champions of Europe.  Glory Glory Man Utd!

Now, both Chelsea and Man Utd have to begin thinking of next season, as we both have some problems (us in attack, need a right back come to mind, while Chelsea will have to sort out the post-Jose situation, Grant's deal, Lamps, Drogba, Carvalho, Malouda, will the russian sell?, etc.).

Winning on penalty kicks is like winning on a one-hole playoff at the 17th Hole at Sawgrass: it gets the job done, but it leaves one wanting...

Agreed.  But the old way of doing full replays - that is, replaying the game in its entirety after extra time still hasn't produced a winner -  isn't exactly optimal either.  Thus suggestions like Peter's, although seemingly wild and weird, make great sense to me.

Tom

I too like Peter's idea (which dooms it from the start.... :'(), but would even make it more quirky (getting back on topic!) by making teams take off one player at the start of AET and then another every 5 minutes.  If this goes on for 3/4 of an hour you'd be left with the two goalies (or maybe the two most skilled and/or least exhausted players) facing each other at the center circle.  It would be like one of those all-comers knock out cage fights on WWE (or any ice hockey game....).

As it was, the penalty shootout, for all its flaws produced as poignant personal drama as I have ever seen in sport.  I have never been a great fan of John Terry, but his play on the field last night was outstanding and the heart-wrenching emotion that his penalty miss engendered was as good a statement as to how passionate players of that game (and any game, even golf) can be.

Hmmm.....  Maybe the Super Bowl ought to be decided by a sudden death series of field goal attempts......

Rich:

LOL!  Peter's idea taken to extremes does get pretty weird.  And one has to admit that yesterday's end was dramatic and poignant.  The problem does remain your last question - PK's do somewhat equate to settling a tied Super Bowl on a series of field goals.

So wild ideas like Peter's do seem to make sense to me.

Of course if the world were more perfect and did not demand immediacy, the old method of replays is pretty damn good.
