There surely is a great deal of lowbrow appeal in the 17th hole at TPC.  In my judgment, that's not all that bad, to tell you the truth.  Golf needs personality and it desperately needs drama.  The island green 17th is inarguably a gimmick, but it's a gimmick that has created an environment that is fraught with a very perilous form of drama.  It has also created an arena for lusty-voiced spectators to get the golfers to really experience the moment in a communal sense.  Given that golf is an altogether too staid and stodgy sport, a little lowbrow sensibility ain't all that bad.  Whether the design of the hole is fair, gimmicky, tricky or tricked up doesn't really matter in the final analysis.  As long as the hole creates the type of tournament drama that it has supplied in the years that they've been hosting the event, the hole will occupy a lofty perch in the game, whether you like it or not.

With the 17th at TOC, I don't think people who live in glass houses should throw stones!

I understand its an old hole and its heresy for stating such but I don't think it should get a free pass just because its old.  Especially in light of the fact that if someone tried to build something like that today they would get mocked/scorned and likely run out of town.
