The Best of the "Best New" Courses
« on: May 05, 2008, 12:38:01 PM »
The Stonebrae thread inspire this question:

With all the well connected and learned contributors on this site I wondered what new courses have openned up in the last 12 months that you would consider must plays - public or private?  Please feel free to comment on multiple courses.  Are there any courses that will no doubt take their rightful place amoung the greatest in the country?  I look forward to your response.

Andrew

Bandon Crossings

I don't think this course is in the "greatest in the country" grouping (not even close), but I do think it is a very solid and enjoyable course and would assume it is in the top tier or two for courses that opened in the past 12 months.

Thanks to Oregon's amazing growing climate, the course looks, feels and plays as if it has been there for 4-5 years vs 9 months in actuality.  It has a very rugged, natural and (dare I say) minimalist feel to it.  Except for a couple instances, the greens are close to the next hole's green, giving the course a "cozy" feel.  There is lots of subtle (for the most part) movement in the terrain that the course seems to take advantage of, rather than fight.

IMO there were some very good golf holes:  #1, 7, 10 (!), 11, 15, 16 & 17.

Great variety of short and long holes for every par, and the architect wasn't afraid to put back to back par 5s (twice).

Overall a very solid course that I enjoyed very much; the style of the course just seemed to fit my eye.

It has some VERY tough competition a few miles up the road, which might take away from this courses own merit, but I believe people making the trip to Bandon should attempt to fit Bandon Crossings in their schedule.

The Club at Irish Creek (Kannapolis, NC) is terrific.  It is on the same property as the old Kannapolis Country Club, but bears little resemblance to its predecessor.  So I think it qualifies as a new course.  Brad Klein's Golfweek review said it would merit strong consideration for top 100 modern status.  Here is a prior thread on the course.  http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,32910.0.html

If resortations are also included, then Charlotte Country Club should be mentioned.  Ron Prichard's work should put CCC back on the table for consideration in the various rankings.

It's nice enough for a resort, but imho, not in the same league as 'best new'. The course feels very manufactured, and we have already discussed weak holes holes such as #8 or #17.

My comment is based on having played it, and it's that good.  I have a bunch of as-far-from-
photoshopped-as-it-gets pics where the course still looks good, IMO.

Wayne -- Have you been to Chambers Bay? And, if so, I'm fine with your comment.

But, if not, would this comment have been placed on the board if Doak or Coore routed this golf course? I find it odd that if we see the designer has a last name of "Jones" whether he were Robert Trent, or Smarty Jones or James Earl, we just roll our eyes.

This Chambers Bay looks wonderful and, more importantly, everyone can play it if they so choose.

Look back at the thread about the Golfweek cover.  I'm guessing there is a fair bit of sarcasm in his statement.

Muskoka Bay in Canada is stunning and a joy to play, and it would be better the second time around.

Wow, check out their website, eye candy galore, looks like a lot of fun and challenging, I gotta play this puppy :)
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I think at least nine opened more than a year ago and maybe the whole course, but I think Long Shadow still deserves mention in this thread.  It's new enough and good enough that it should be in the discussion.

Chambers Bay has already won numerous awards.

Chambers Bay, which is operate by KemperSports Management, has garnered these awards:
- Top-ranked daily fee/municipal course and No. 2 overall on Golfweek's "Best New Courses" list
- "Best New Course of the Year" on GOLF Magazine's list of the "Top 10 New Courses You Can Play"
- Winner of the Daily Fee category of Golf Inc.'s "Development of the Year" contest
- Travel + Leisure Golf magazine's 2007 Course of the Year

There is a Fazio course in Idaho that I am hearing good things about that may contend for best new private.

Goozer Ranch...  http://www.gozzerranchclub.com/golf/

I doubt it would qualify for 2007 because I don't think its even had it official opening yet.  A few on here have played and it looks to be a terrific addition to the area.

Cary: there is a course called Taboo in that area as well - don't know much about it other than Mike Weir is associated with it somehow.

Jerry,

Taboo is just down the road from Muskoka Bay and is a worthy stop if you're planning a trip to the Muskoka region (north of Toronto) of Ontario.  It's not quite as visually stunning as Muskoka Bay but certainly a quality golf course very much in the same league as (with similar topography to) Greywalls in Northern Michigan.

some of these worthy courses like Sebonackand Ballyneal  have been open  longer than 12 months now. I think Chambers Bay is the best of what I have seen. I would think Erin Hills will attract votes as well. I hear great things about Colorado Golf Club and Pronghorn but have not seen them. There is a pretty cool course down south that Mike Young built and Nuzzo has something pretty cool coming out this year as well.

Yes indeed! THAT is a stunning looking course. Has a couple holes that call to mind Tobacco Road. I wanna!

But wait! Aren't all those trees considered an incredible evil in the World of GCA? Quite a few, afterall, are actually very in play. Vertical hazards. Oh no!

Sorry, couldn't help it.  :-[
