DIXIE CUP V - NOW EVEN MORE AFFORDABLE
« on: April 24, 2008, 04:55:35 PM »
As I know many are awaiting the announcement with bated breath, the Dixie Cup tournament office is pleased to announce the situs for Dixie Cup V will be Brooksville Florida.

The scheduled date is October 18 and 19, and we will once again not be in the company of Tiger B., who will no doubt be touring the South Carolina Piedmont searching for misadventure.

10/18 we will tee up at WW Pine Barrens in the a.m. with an open afternoon.

10/19 will be at Dunes Golfers Club (f/k/a Dunes at Seville) in the a.m.

Rolling Oaks is already booked for a Junior event both days, but it is anticipated that afternoon times will become available on both Saturday and Sunday.

Costs at World Woods will be $50.00 for the first round of the day and $30.00 for any additional round same day on either course. The short course is available for the bargain rate of $10.00 walking (one of the best bargains in golf). These rates include tax and cart if desired, walking is permitted.

The fee at Dunes is not yet set, but will likely be lower than WW.

Lodging is available at the following nearby hotels (these are the closest hotels to WW, and the HI Ex is relatively new, and amenities are nearby):

Holiday Inn Express,
14112 CORTEZ BLVD.
BROOKSVILLE, FL 34613
352 597 4540
Rate around $90/night

Comfort Inn Weeki Wachee
9373 Cortez Blvd
Weeki Wachee FL
352 596 9000
Rate around $77.00/night

Hotel rates are subject to change, and no advance arrangements have been made. October is considered off season but we will be competing with the Junior Tour participants for lodging. We can probably negotiate a group rate once we have a feel for how many will be making the trip to this incredible part of the State of Florida.

This schedule is very firm. It has been coordinated around the aeration and overseeding schedule, and October is booked every weekend with events at World Woods. We have conferred with the World Woods superintendent and he has promised to work with us on preparation of the course, and he assures us he can have things in fine shape in late October. World Woods had been reputed to be suffering from poor conditions, but their new super has made dramatic improvements in the last 3 years. It is in the best shape it has ever been and gets better every year of late. Dunes has been closed for about 18 months and is planning on reopening in June after a large scale renovation. I walked the course about 4 weeks ago and see no reason it should not be ready to open come June, and by October I am confident it will provide a wonderful golf experience for us. Dunes truly is a hidden gem, and deserves to be seen by this august body. Tom Doak has been meaning to get over to Dunes for about 20 years now and we are hopeful he will be joining us to finally avail himself of this opportunity.

Satellite golf is abundant nearby, with Brooksville CC high on the list with a recent renovation by Bobby Weed including the construction of 3 new holes in and out of a limestone quarry. Pete Dye's Southern Hills Plantaion is on the south side of Brooksville, and Black Diamond Ranch is about 40 minutes up the road. There is also some new course over around Clermont on lake Apopka that a few of you may have heard of, its about an hour away.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WORLDWOODS REQUIRES A NONREFUNDABLE 50% DEPOSIT. THE DEPOSIT IS FULLY CREDITED TO THE GROUP, EVEN IF FEWER THAN RESERVED SHOW UP. IN OTHER WORDS, IF WE BOOK 30 TEE TIMES WE HAVE TO PUT UP $750.00 NONREFUNDABLE, BUT IF ONLY 15 SHOW UP, IT'S ALL GOOD. WITHOUT A DEPOSIT WE CANNOT SECURE THESE DATES, SO WE NEED A COMMITMENT ASAP. TO SECURE THE DATES YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY $25.00. A SMALL PRICE FOR SUCH A FANTASTIC EVENT ON WORLD CLASS GOLF COURSES.

John-

Thanks for the details.  I can't wait, after seeing the SWWOG and Mickelson's comments to David Toms about "the bunkers and the little shrubs" on the course.

I'm gonna try really hard to keep the decks clear this year to make it down guys.  World Woods is a favorite of mine...

By the way, I recommend the Plantation Inn in nearby Homassassa (sp?) Springs...great food and jacuzzi...and they have packages with WW.

This sounds great Sarge, just let us know where to mail the check. Playing WW with well conditioned putting greens will be a real treat!

I signed up and put down my deposit.

If anyone is flying into Orlando, my home club is 10 minutes from the Orlando airport.

I hope this year I can make it - I'll be sending my deposit.  I will try and play either before or after as well.

Will Rolling Oaks be tied up before and after as well?

I'm in, and only hoping that this date doesn't conflict with the Nebraska "believers cup".   Then, I would be a basket case of anxt and conflicted values...  ::) ;) ;D

I am confident you can get out on the oaks on friday 10/17. We should be able to get out in the afternoons on the weekend, they just can't make a commitment right now

Pine Barrens and the Dunes are a couple of my favorites.  I am scheduled to be in DFW that weekend.  Brauer and I were going to play Pine Dunes in Frankston, TX during May but can't get out due to a tournament.  We're looking at October now if I can get in a day early for work.

Sorry I'll miss out on this event.  My loss.  Enjoy!

Booked the comfort inn with the government rate, $55.00 a night.  Rooms looked to be in scarce supply.  No charge up front and no penalty for cancelling as long as it's done 1 day in advance.  I'd book now and worry later if you're intending to go.

John,

World Woods is one of my favorite places to play, sort of my home course away from home.  My grandmother lives about 5 minutes from the course, so this just gives me an excuse to go visit her.

$50 + $30 replay is one of the best bargains in all of golf.

Do they still have the underwater ballet at Weeki Wachi?  If so, put me down for a flying visit!

Which team does Ms Weeki Wachee play for?  She looks like she could play a mean right tackle.
