South Carolina

I am taking a few friends to the LSU/South Carolina game this fall. We stayed in Hilton Head and drove up to Columbia last time and it was wonderful. There are lots of great golf/good lifestyle places in that part of the world. Are there any other ideas? thanks Tiger

I've heard good things about Sage Valley but not been there yet.  Ditto for Palmetto.

Played Sage Valley and it is great place to stay, but 3 days is a bit long there.

I haven't played it, but Palmetto sure looks like a great place.

Did you get to May River - if not, check out Ran's review.

Pinehurst? Not a bad drive although it can get interesting behind a lumber truck.

You also could base out of Charleston and pick up yeamans, bulls bay and kiawah.

Or base out of Wild Dunes. Although the golf's far short of the Ocean Course I prefer the resort vibe there and Charleston's an easier drive.

Tiger, My opinion is that Kiawah is a hard place to beat for golf, solitude, and access to Charleston. HH is nice for a family but Kiawah has more to offer if golf is your primary focus. The restaurant selection in Charleston is pretty special. HH is a meal at the Salty Dog. The Ocean course, Cougar Point, Turtle Point, not to mention Yeaman's if access can be obtained. Also the Cassique course is well regarded although I have not played it. Good Luck- sounds like a fun trip.

I would second May River (at Palmetto Bluff). I played out there a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. It is easily my favorite Nicklaus course and the best that I've played in the Hilton Head area.

It depends what you want:

Fancy/resort style:  Kiawah (ok golf to me wteo Ocean and 2 private courses), hilton head areas selection, or Palmetto bluff (1 course only)

Old/relaxed:  Palmetto, Aiken Golf club, Midland Valley, or Sage Valley (not old or relaxed from what I hear)

Broad selection/public:  Grand Strand (Dunes, Strantz courses, Barefoot selection, etc)

Close to Cola:  Camden, Columbia CC, and one other course (Spring Valley or Forest Lake)

I'd play Palmetto, Aiken Golf Club, and/or Midland Valley on the way, (nice unnoticed golf course)
and Camden CC.

Sage Valley- access issues and 5th on that list (IMHO)

Tiger,

I'll third or fourth the suggestion of playing at Camden and possibly staying there in a B&B if you like the small-town ambience. Probably an hour from downtown Camden to the tailgating at the game, less than that if you leave early enough to avoid stadium traffic.

If you happen to end up closer to Columbia consider this an open invitation to play at Columbia CC, a fine c. 1960 Ellis Maples design that's always in very playable condition. I'll be glad to host or introduce you and your friends any time, even if you insist on wearing silly purple and gold clothing. Our club is in Blythewood, about eight exits up I-77 from the stadium (20-odd minutes).

Tiger,

I would suggest The Patriot near Greenwood, SC, 45 minutes to an hour SW from Columbia.  The course is private, but I would imagine you could call ahead for access.  I'm obviously biased, but it's a very fun course to play.  Great green complexes and the back nine is really hard to beat.  Most of the people I know that have played there tell me they want to go back to the first tee immediately after putting out on #18.  That's always a good sign.  Hosting the SC Open this year, I believe.

Tiger....

I went into more detail on Camden's history on Sean's thread, but (as a homer) I don't think you can go wrong coming our way.  Plenty of good places to stay and eat, and golf (both in town and within an hour) is great.  PM me if you'd like details.

BTW, I'd love to host you.....  I lived in Monroe for a couple of years and was a member at Bayou DeSaird and Squire Creek.
