Georgia golf between Savannah and Augusta

A friend is going to be spending a couple of days at the Masters. He will travel up to Augusta from Savannah. What public or resort courses of interest are along that route? No big name places as their tee times seem to be booked. Are Cuscowilla or Longshadow anywhere near that route?

Ed,

I think Long Shadow is the ticket for your friend. 

You might encourage him to call John in the pro shop who is a supremely good guy and a font of info about courses in the area.

Ed,
Savannah is southeast of Augusta.
Longshadow and Cus are due west of Augusta.
So no they're not on the way at all.
Best bet is to take the detour and play them anyway (1 hour 15 m)
or play Palmetto or Aiken Golf Club (30-40 min)
Or play in Savannah area (probably the best value that week)

Forest Heights in Statesboro is on the way if he has access.

I really enjoyed Cedar Creek when I visited the Masters. Also if he has military access Fort Gordon in Augusta is very good.

    I've looked up Cuscowilla and Longshadow in the meantime and they don't look like too far of a detour.

In a couple of years (or late next year?), the Davis Love III/Gil Hanse design at Victory Lane in Cobbtown should open.   It was supposed to break ground last month.  Private, though.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I am biased, but the Patriot course on Lake Greenwood [1hr north of Augusta], is very good and should be available for play....If not IM me.

Ed no no golf anywhere within 100 miles of there unless it is Mike's course.  the prices are jacked up, full of bad corporate outing types, slow rounds and many of the course have just punch their greens. Go to the Masters, do not leave the property, do not pass go and spend way over $200 on Masters stuff like I do each year and whatever else you do leave the sticks at home.

The Patriot is fun to play.  And with a prior call, they welcomed our foursome.   It is north of Augusta.

And pleeeeze,  if you are traveling the backroads during THIS tourney week,  obey the speed limits.  

It lowers the cost of any golf trip, and you don't have any delays.

Wilmington Plantation in Savannah, Savannah Country Club, Forest Heights in Statesboro, Links at Lost Plantation in Rincon-in that order. Wilmington's a semi-private D.Ross, SCC is great if you can get an in, Forest Heights can be had for about $50 (says its private, but I went to Georgia Southern-they take cash). No golf to speak of after Statesboro that won't be inflated Masters week. Any other area seems out of the way to me to drive.

Ed, I have played the courses at Reynolds Plantation and Cuscowilla the week of The Masters and they are in fact pricey. I found Cusco to be the most enjoyable and also architecturally pretty cool. The other thing to remember is that Hilton Head is only 45 minutes from Savannah. No shortage of good courses to play there.

No way he would regret an hour or two detour to play Long Shadow.  It is well worth it.
