Courses I like that would make for an interesting match play event:

Longshadow - The closing stretch makes for some good match play as long as things aren't out of hand early on.

Edmund Orgill Golf Course - From the white tees.  Playing under 6000 yards, the pros would need birdie to halve most holes.  They'd be going for most of the par 4s from the tee.

Ballyneal - Let the previous hole's winner pick the next tee for a fun twist.

Sheep Ranch - Winner of the previous hole picks the tee AND the green!


And the one I don't like, but would be interested to see host the match play event:

Gillette Ridge - It has some holes I would hate much less if I were playing a match.  It would be fun to see the pros play the #4 banana green.

Coer D'Alene. Lot of bizarre holes and some really good ones too. Sergio and Boo would have to ride the boat to 14 together. Fehrety could drive boat and do stir it up interviews. Plus nice lake views.

I second the nomination for Pacific Dunes. 

It would be great to see the players on a shorter course that has an ability to offer multiple options while often tempting the aggressive player to hit driver as near the green as possible, possibly leaving a very difficult up and down.

It would certainly be unique and a lot of fun to see on TV.

I actually like this course as a match play course.  With the pins tucked and the greens convex it is interesting to see how confident these guys are in their iron shots.

The fairways are probably too wide.  I do not see alot of interesting decisions off the tee.

If trying to be realistic and hold it at same time of year, and find a course that could accomodate the logistics, I'd go with just switching these last 2 weeks or three weeks.  In any order you like, Riviera, Pebble, and the Fought course they are on.  I think any one of them could be the celebrity pro am, at least Pebble and Riviera have the same star studded cache.  All of them have the logistics infrastructure. 

Going away from California, to a logical same time of year venue... Kiawah TOC is probably OK, as is Bulls Bay ( and the walk there will be a wee strenuous but good for competition)   

Is Stone Eagle a possible?

Given that it is a World Championship of Golf it should go around the world.
Royal Melbourne,Chantilly,Hirono, Sunningdale would be a good start.

I've been in Bandon the last two days.  Wednesday it was calm and sunny and someone might have shot 61.  This afternoon the wind came up and the last five holes at Pacific Dunes would have knocked someone's teeth out.

Tom,

Sunningdale is very short now but the hazards at holes like 5, 6 and 7 stop you from going too far down the fairway - as does the shape of the 17th. The second shots there are pretty much the same as they have always been.
1 is a strong two-shotter as are 10 and 14 although realistically there is not a par five on the course for those guys - and the short 4s like 11 are more dangerous now they can reach the green quite easily.

What it really needs is for the manufactures to make a 6600 yard ball.


I think it would be great fun to play matchplay there - or maybe they could use the more difficult New.

Barnbougle would be great fun for matchplay - too much variation from morning to afternoon for stroke play but perfect for matches.
I played 36 holes there a few weeks ago - wedge on the 7th at 7.30 and 4 iron at 12.00!

Given that this is a WORLD Golf Championship event and the comments made this week (in particular by Westwood but echoed by others) I'm surprised (and, I have to admit disappointed) that there are so many suggestions here for courses in the USA.  Come on guys, there's a whole world out there, don't you think at least one of these events could be played outside the US.  It's really quite civilised in Europe and Australasia, you know, and flights are easy.  Anyway, the premise of this thread is that the top pros will all come, wherever the event is hosted.

Tom - does it really matter if someone would have shot 61 at PD? It is match play. But perhaps architects wouldn't want their courses to be eaten up by the pros, especially ones that weren't really designed with them in mind.

While I find the typical birdie-fest a little boring in stroke play. I'm not sure I would feel the same in match play since it man vs. man. A Holmes-Tiger match could have been very interesting at PD. Holmes seems to hit driver almost exclusively whereas will lay up more if necessary. It would be interesting to see how this played out. And as you pointed the wind could wreak havoc.

I'd like to see them play the match play at any course and at a time of year when wind is a significant factor and the ground game is a must.

As with most of the non US posters on here I'd like to see it played anywhere but in the USA.

If it keeps its February date then Royal Melbourne or Barnbougle Dunes.

If it can be moved to a European spring or autumn date Royal County Down or Royal Dornoch.

I'm inclined to favor some famous course that we rarely get to see, like Pine Valley or Dornoch.  Perenial # 1 course in the world or the great out-of-the way Scottish links.  Unfortunately, technology may have rendered both inappropriate for the pro game.

PGA West Stadium Course-they said it was too tough for the Hope, for this it would be perfect, also Palm Springs this time of the year is great. Stone

Sean,.....really?  Rye makes absolutely no sense to me at all.  To me, good matchplay tv is high risk reward golf.  Rye is a tight little ball eating fescue course with small greens.  No one would ever hit driver.  I fail to see how it would excite.

Augusta is an obvious choice as it seems so many Masters really end up being almost a matchplay on the back nine.  Sawgrass stikes as another good one as do both recent international venues for the President's cup - Royal Montreal & Player's course in South Africa.

Its fair enough of you don't think Rye a great course.  My angle is that since the US Open, British Open & Masters have many of the great championship courses cornered, why not use other courses which break the mould a bit?  I have seen the par 72-71, 7300 yard course plenty. 

BTW  By implying that Rye is a ball eater I assume you think these events should take place at congenial times of the year.  I think it would be awesome if a great event was staged out of season.

You make some good points Sean, but even in the "off" season I think Rye would be iron, wedge.  I'm not making a judgement as to the quality of the course, just its suitability for pro match play.
