Where Would They Play the Match Play if You Could Choose?
« on: February 21, 2008, 01:41:49 PM »
If Finchem put you in charge of site selection and timing, where and when would you schedule the Match Play?  Assume 100% cooperation from the players (ie they all show up no matter where you send them).

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Old Head. At the same time. Never been there, would love to see it on TV. Surely would be a good test at this time of year. Get your woolie hats out boys. Make them earn their huge paychecks.

Scrap the Crosby and have the Matchplay there permanently.

Lincoln Park.

This is a good subject, let's not just turn it into another list of "Pine Valley, Ballybunion, Merion, and Cypress Point."

Nothing wrong with them but they're kind of predictable.

Match play seems to suit crazy courses. What's the craziest one out there?

Lincoln Park ...

All those short par4s and long par 3s, the side hill lies, the doglegs, the views, the tourists walking through the course, car horns and alarms going off throughout the round ... it would be grand theater and match play strategy at its best ...

Assuming all the "world" events are at different places throughout the world, I would choose a tough little sub par 70 bugger.  First choice, Rye.  Second choice, Harlech.

Lessee...Tobacco Road, Black Mesa, Ballyneal, Bulls Bay, NGLA, Bayonne (using rerouting where 14 is the first hole so they finish teeing off in the ocean and play to the clubhouse and huge flagpole), Royal New Kent (that's where Strantz had his matches between Mike Strantz design team and Royal Cty Down staff), Pasatiempo, PGA West stadium (just to hear the pros cry like Nancy Kerrigan), and Oakmont.

They should play huge events at Oakmont every year.  Those are my favorite greens on earth.

Going to have to go with Lincoln Park.

As said before with all those short holes, they would be gun-slinging all day long.  Throw in the world class location and the views, it would be perfect.

Sean,.....really?  Rye makes absolutely no sense to me at all.  To me, good matchplay tv is high risk reward golf.  Rye is a tight little ball eating fescue course with small greens.  No one would ever hit driver.  I fail to see how it would excite.

Augusta is an obvious choice as it seems so many Masters really end up being almost a matchplay on the back nine.  Sawgrass stikes as another good one as do both recent international venues for the President's cup - Royal Montreal & Player's course in South Africa.

Its fair enough of you don't think Rye a great course.  My angle is that since the US Open, British Open & Masters have many of the great championship courses cornered, why not use other courses which break the mould a bit?  I have seen the par 72-71, 7300 yard course plenty.

BTW  By implying that Rye is a ball eater I assume you think these events should take place at congenial times of the year.  I think it would be awesome if a great event was staged out of season.

Harbour Town in March, Colonial in May. Make HT a par-70 by dropping par-5 #2 to par-4.

Does the par have any significance in match play?

I do think Colonial would be neat...especially after they finish the upcoming changes out there.

What a stupid I am!!! ;D ;D They should have a double-check preview on pre-posts for newbies like me. I have no idea where I was going with the #2 thing, just always wanted to see it become a par-4 I guess...but I still think HT is great match-play venue that would bring everyone to a level playing field, and March is one of the times the wind gusts the most around HHI...Thanks for catching my blunder, Kyle!!!
