Best value golf
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:26:36 PM »
When my brother-in-law was at St Andrews University he paid 2/6 a round to play the Old Course, or the price of a then Dunlop 65 (old size, of course) per round. When I was at Oxford (late 60s) we paid £5 a year for membership of the University Golf Society which gave us unlimited free golf on Southfield (Colt) and reduced green fees at Huntercombe and Frilford Heath. What is the best value in golf today?

Assuming there are no breaks, restrictions or deals involved the best value courses I can think of are Kington & Lakewood Shores - Gailes.

Over here, that's about $120 in today's dollars.  I can play Bethpage Black twice on the weekend, and that's it.  Still, not bad.  I wonder if the Columbia Lions get any comparable annual deals with NY metro clubs.  Anyone know?

I saw an ad today, which, for me, holds no value.

This newer public course nearby is selling annual passes, unlimited golf for $99/ year, minimum two year purchase. This is good Mon- Fri, or for another $75/ year you can get the Mon-Sun pass.

The thing is this course is a terrible walk.

Mark,

I think I can arrange a round for you at Royal Harare G.C., Zimbabwe,  for about Z$ 30,000,000.00  that's about nine US dollars.

Rustic Canyon in LA area.  Any very good course within 50 miles of LA that is under $50 to play for nonresidents is the steal of the century.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I'll support Sean's recommendation of Kington.  I also think Silloth is fantastic value at £37.  I can't think of another course of that quality at less than half the price.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Try Tanglewood Park - Championship Course.  I don't think there's another course in the U.S. that's held a major championship in which you can walk off the street, get on the tee for no more than $30.  Plus to top that, it's a great course.

I enjoyed the Cleveland public golf scene.

Every weekend (weather permitting) for 3 years I alternated walking a Donald Ross (Manakiki) and Stanley Thompson (Sleepy Hollow) course.   Both fine tracks.  They cost $24, 26, 26 my three years there.  Though you could pay in advance and get discounts.

I'd have to second Mark's nomination of Silloth.

I'd also nominate Shiskine at £19 for 12 holes.

Does Cruden Bay for £20 on 15th June 2008 count ;D
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Mentioned before in another thread, in Western MA The Ledges, a decent pretty well kept muni with memberships (yearly passes, really) available, just down the street from The Orchards @ $22 is hard to beat.

Not to hijack the thread, but you could also lump best membership deals / value around the world.  My course is $2500 per year.  We have 45 holes, walking is free, cart fee is $16, and we have reciprocal privileges for only cart fee at another club with 54 holes.  I know it's not the best deal ever, but we think we're pretty lucky to have it.

I like seeing the NC courses in the mix. Wilmington and Tanglewood are great golf courses. And I agree with Tanglewood being one of the best values in golf certainly. I think around the Raleigh NC area, The Neuse might be the best value there, with off season rates being like $20 to walk and its rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest (not that being rated really means anything)
--Joe Hancock-where is this public facility selling passes for $99 a year? Sounds like my kind of place.

Spokane must be one of the best/most reasonably priced muni scenes in the country.  Hangman Valley is also a very nice public track at a reasonable price.  Add a short trip to Circling Raven in Idaho and Harbottles new course in Pullman and you've got yourself a bargain holiday.

Couldn't agree more WH.

You also have Downriver in Spokane and Meadowwood in Liberty Lake to further enhance the selection in the area...and with the exception of Circling Raven, all are had for less than $30.

There's clearly some excellent value around in the States. I'm not surprised to see Kington and Silloth as the two English nominations. The best value deals in UK golf are the open competitions in which you get to play the course usually at its best set up for £10 or something like. The Welsh clubs are keen on that - you book on-line for Conwy, for instance.
