For all the collectors & historians,    there will an auction conducted by PBA Galleries of San Francisco, California on Thursday, March 6, 2008.   This auction is Sale 375 and includes ‘Fine and Rare Golf Books, Photographs & Collectibles.'  There are  380  ‘golf'  related lots.

This sale also includes baseball books and collectibles.

Obviously many rare and collectible books on golf, golf course architecture, etc are offered in this auction.   

In addition,  there are many club histories, various tournament programs including US Open, PGA, Masters, PGA Ryder Cup, US Amateur, Walker Cup, etc..   Many items are related to famous golfers,  Bobby Jones,  Ouimet,  Sarazen, Nicklaus, etc.   Most of the 380 items have a presale estimate of $200-$600.

Some interesting items were :

> Wethered & Simpson, ‘The Architectural Side of Golf,' first edition, signed by both authors, est presale $15,000 / 20,000
> limited first edition of  ‘Down the Fairway,' signed by Jones and Keeler,  $10,000 / 15,000
> Tillinghast, ‘The Mutt and Other Golf Yarns,' first edition, signed $5,000 / $8,000
> many first editions of the books by Hutchinson
> rare, second USGA annual, 1896 USGA Constitution, By Laws, and Rules of USGA $5,000 / 8,000.

Other items such as  :
> early 1910 & 1920 brochures relative to Pebble Beach, and an interesting first edition, ‘Photographic Study of Pebble Beach Golf Links, Stroke by Stroke,' 1952.
> first edition, 1924, 30 page booklet on Monterey Peninsula Country Club, est $500 / 800.

I'm sitting this out this auction, but I have made purchases in the past.  But I noticed the bloom is off the Confidential Guide. They have one standard Sleeping Bear first trade edition which is autographed by Doak, plus a photocopy of the private edition. The combined lot is estimated at $300/$500, which is probably half of previous levels.

Based on some recent eBay sales, I wouldn't be surprised to see that estimate exceeded by a fair amount.

When did it become alright to sell photocopies?  I was sickened enough when our very own members of this site (Golfweek guys no less) photocopied their copies and sold the originals.  This is a new low proving once again that golfers are not the ethical animals some wish they were.  Golfers think it is not cheating if they can't see their own folly.

I just sent an email to the Vice President in charge of Client Services questioning the ethics of this sale.  I'm at a loss what would keep the buyer from making photocopies of his photocopy and selling this week after week.  I hope others may want to email the auction house in like form and ask what is going on.  The address is shannon@pbagalleries.com

I have wondered about this too.  I recently ordered Darwin's "Golf Courses of the British Isles" on Amazon.  When it came, it was a nicely printed copy, in color and seemingly professional.  It was published in India, however, and on the inside cover it said that it was a "facsimile of the original".  It also was a bit cheaper than I would have expected.  Is this some sort of pirated copy?  Does the fact that Amazon sells it make it more likely to be legit?  Is there some statute of limitations on books that are out of print, so that copies become legal?

Too bad I'm not a big corporation with a battery of lawyers to call those guys up and threaten them.

Seriously, though, selling a photocopy of the book is clearly illegal and unethical.

Art R:  Darwin's book is different because the copyright has expired.  You can print all the copies you want, but I'm betting they can do it cheaper in India.

I expect the PBA Galleries folks to step up to the plate and do the right thing.

Since they have been put on notice for lack of a better word,   I imagine they will do a quick check with their lawyer & their terms and conditions, and have the lot either modified or removed by March 6. 

Although the text descriptions for all items is fairly uniform,  and all materials presented to them,  it may have been a slip on their part.

I wanted to bring this back up as it is a fine auction.  I am amazed at the price of these hickory clubs.  Why would anyone buy such a thing unless Jones used them specifically to win a major?
