What does it matter that a J.B. Holmes, with his 139 mph swing speed -- or jack Nicklaus, back in his glory days -- could do ridiculous things to classic golf holes? I can't do that, you can't do that, and 99.9999 percent of players who ever stuck a peg in the ground can't do that.

I'm as alarmed about what modern equipment is doing to the pro game as the next guy, but CPC is still a perfectly valid golf course, regardless of what the freaks can do to it.

Spyglass also held up pretty well. Mr. Holmes hit less than driver on many of the par 4s, including: 2, 4, 8, 16, and 17. Placement is still more important than brute force on many of the great holes.

On a very different level - very different - JB Holmes was just doing what so many of us do: "I didn't come here to lay up."

And now that he's thrown down the gauntlet, if I ever have the pleasure of playing CP, I will feel compelled to try it, too - and watch my ball fall mercilessly into the ocean, a mere 50+ yards from reaching its destination. :)

I went out and watched JB start his round on #10 at Poppy Hills today.

On 10, into a slight breeze, he flew the bunker on the right and the grassy hollow beyond it.  Unfortunately his ball hung in the rough and he had 205 into the green so only about 310 off the tee.  From there he hit it into the front bunker, blew it into the back bunker and made bogey 6.  He parred #11 and then on 12 hit a 5-wood that went through the fairway and into the trees from where he made bogey.  I was a little surprised he didn't take driver on 12 and knock it over the trees.  Perhaps he didn't figure out where to aim it in a practice round.

One thing for sure, he needs to seriously work on his pre-shot routine.  He took about 1:30 or more to hit a couple of those shots.  And on the putting green on #10 he froze behind the ball looking at the break for more than 30 seconds and took well over a minute to hit his par putt.

Agreed, John. Watching him drives me nuts. Almost as bad as Garcia's milking the club from a couple of years ago.

I just heard on TGC that Holmes drove it OVER the green on the 17th at CPC earlier this week. Holy cow!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o
And just think, by 2012 it will probably be a wee 4 Iron onto the green. Let's keep those technological "improvements" going!!

Exactly.  We are talking about one guy here, the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Mike,
No this was not either of RjJs sons .  RJ oldest was actually only the third longest last year but had the best short game.

Jim,
I don't know what kind of launch monitor you are using, but 109 will not give you 290, maybe on an airport runway.

One guy leads and others will follow, or learn and follow.   As another noted,  high schoolers are hitting the ball tremendous distances.  I can attest to the college players as well.   The good thing is that the manufacturers have quit all their research and are henceforth lying down on the job  ;D

Sing along with me....

They tried to send the ball to rehab
but the mannies said no, no, no

J.B. Holmes: CUT

J.B. Holmes - Made Cut, did not play on Sunday.

The AT&T cuts to the nearest number to 60 and pays 70 and ties.  He earned $12,450 and moved to first in the Fed-Ex Cup standings.  There were exactly 60 at -1 and 70 at even.  He was even.

He really blew up on the front 9 at Poppy Hills (his last 9 holes) on  Saturday.
