The manager of the wine storage facility I use will be in the S. Florida area at the end of the week and was interested in what moderately priced >$150 public courses the group could recommend.

I had offered either of my two clubs in that area but he had no interest after I told him he would have to sign in with a less ethnic surname.  His loss, I even had him set  to play with my cousin Shelby who might have even paid.

What are the best choices for him?

crandon park on key biscayne (an island located off downtown miami). a devlin/von hagge design that used to host the royal carribean classic. usually in great shape with breezes(and views) from biscayne bay. good test of golf.

biltmore in coral gables. donald ross design (walkable) brought back to its original glory by brian silva. hosts the prestigious junior orange bowl tournament won by tiger, sergio, and a host of others. a really enjoyable time can be had by all.

miami beach golf club- an arthur hills redesign that has a few tricked up holes but is usually in great shape. water on the brain is the main problem.

doral- dick wilson classic with pebble beach prices. tough but not worth the sticker shock. can get deals with hotel packages.

I played the Blue Monster at Doral last May through an EZLINKS.com special price of $104.  It was worth it at that price but I can't say that I would have enjoyed it at the full rack rate of $260.    Unless you can find a similar deal, I would seek out other options.

Check out Colony West in Tamarac, about 15 miles west of Ft. Lauderdale, a very challenging and interesting Devlin/VonHagge course.

What is the news on North Palm Beach CC, the public NIcklaus re-do of Raynor ?

Will be playing Everglades as quassi's guest and need another day of golf

I played the North Palm Beach Beach course last week - new greens are a lot of fun with some very sever contours.  Bunkering is also very interesting and challenging.  Conditioning is okay but it was playing firm and fast - unfortunately not much in the way of rough so if the ball runs out of the fairway there is not much of a penalty. It is very walkable.

Emerald Hills in Hallandale is a good Von Hagge/Devlin course.  Many intersting holes but like many in the area is sort of wedged in between the houses - still worth it to play but can be pricey.

I used to live right next to Deer Creek Golf Course in Deerfield Beach. While I have blotted most of my time in Florida from my memory, Deer Creek was much better than the average Florida course. Who knows what they are charging now, but back in my day it was fairly reasonably priced. Just before I moved there in the late 90s it was completely redesigned by Arthur Hill and everyone I talked to loved the new course over the old course.

So the British, of all ages, still walk the course. On trips to Florida or the American desert, they still marvel, or shudder, at the fleets of electric carts going off in the morning like the first assault wave at the Battle of El Alamein. It is unlikely, for some time, that a Briton will come across in his native land such a scorecard as Henry Longhurst rescued from a California club and cherished till the day he died. The last on its list of local rules printed the firm warning "A Player on Foot Has No Standing on the Course."
