Northern California, Mackenzie (maybe one of the Sacramento courses, but the hills might be too big)

Good guess, Chip, but incorrect on both counts. You are in the right State. A clue soon.......

Another great guess. The site does look somewhat similiar, but no. You are on the right track though.......

I'm guessing SoCal by the hills, maybe south towards San Diego.

John, another good guess, but the bunkers are not John Duncan Dunn's style. Again, the site IS somewhat similiar. I like your thinking though!

I thought of Stockton also. But, I thought Stockton was from Redlands and MacKenzie did a remodel at Redlands CC and David said no on MacKenzie.

Billy Bell, Sr. / Red Hill?

Is it more of a jewel than a pearl possibly? I think I got it. A two time PGA winner made his home there, but a two time Masters winner has the course record. Right?

My eyes aren't that great and he's a little far away but one of the three people standing in the foreground looks like Maxie Behr to me.

It would be a dead ringer for Riviera if it wasn't for for those hills that don't quite match up. I'm still going to go with Thomas, those are his or Bells bunkers. I think. Maybe.

Matt is red hot here! Ryan is correct with his assesment of the bunkers. Mark, Elsinore is NLE.

That's an amazing photo!!!

Of La Jolla Country Club...Billy Bell.

I believe that's the opening hole, a friendly par 4.  #2 is a pitch across a small barranca, just on the left of the photo.
Then #3 goes left, and we see in the distance, running parallel to the fill slopes, from l to r, the 4th.

Good golf course!!  I had the privelege of caddying for Littler, Rodgers, Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns, and Paul Runyan, 2 time PGA champ, when I was in high school in the 60s.

A current photo would show a highly manicured, treed layout.

ps........Mount Soledad is in the distance.
Today the entire hillside is expensive homes and a fully planted mediterrean landscape, overlooking the jewel of the southern california coast.

DavidS:

What I'm wondering, and I have for years (looking at courses like that photo above) is if that California contingent (who aren't that easy to identify but I think the likes of Behr, Hunter, Mackenzie, perhaps Hollins or even Bell and most certainly Thomas would have to be included) were onto something or perhaps even a few things really revolutionary in architecture around the last half of the 1920s.

I have an inkling of some of the things they were thinking about and thinking about "getting up to" and I don't think they were thinking about pushing the envelope, I think they were talking about blowing it to Kingdom Come!

Why they weren't able to truly develop it and pull it off I think is a real story.

Not to be mysterious, I'd be willing to explain what I mean in some specifics. It may be that some of the odd details in that photo above show it.
