Your Favorite Devereux Emmet Bunker
« on: January 15, 2008, 09:31:48 PM »
I am doing some bunkers on an old Dev Emmet course where the original bunkers have been lost to Tilly and Jones Sr. involvement. The membership wants to "restore" the Emmet style to the course and I was hoping that some of you could help out with what an archetypical Emmet bunker really looks like.

I have seen the bunkers at Garden City (despite Travis influence), Congressional, and Huntington but what really defines an Emmet bunker?
ie smooth edges vs lacey, deep vs shallow, penal vs not penal etc etc.

What is the best example of an Emmet bunker? What course? What hole? Why?

 Bump . . .

I see a lot of Views for your Post but this is quite an esoteric question - one I'd hate to see float away before someone who knows might see it.   Sorry I can't help with the answer.

I have no idea what constitutes an Emmet bunker, but my favorite are the cross-bunkers on #2 at Huntington. They provide so much excitement for the women and the little kids that play that course. Also, for the older men. It is too bad that the hole isn't a little longer. Still love it though. The ones on #8 are cool, also.

I hope someone who is knowledgable about Emmet contributes to this thread, because I have always had an interest in his work.

Are there any extant Emmet bunkers left out there?

Try the Leatherstocking course in Cooperstown.

I feel strongly the bunkers are where they always have been, but I can't verify their 'look' as accurate.

But it looks to be.

AdamS:

Have you ever studied any old photos of Emmet bunkers? If not I'm pretty sure this site can produce some for you on here. That should be a whole lot more useful to you than just getting people on here to describe them.

By the way, Adam, have you ever heard of "Gay" architecture?

TEPaul is probably right. I should have just come right out and asked if anyone has old Emmet photos.

Glenn, I have come across some menions about Emmet in reference to his use of cross bunkers, but there really aren't many on this course in particular (Jones Sr. probably took them out when he did a renovation of the course).

Slag, thanks for the bump.

If anyone has photos of old (or "restored") Emmet bunkers, please let me know.

Thanks

PS TEPaul I haven't ever heard of "gay" architecture.
