Knoxville, Chattanooga area courses
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:23:59 AM »
Fellow GCA'r, Dave Neveux, and I are fed up with winter here in East Lansing, MI and even though we got a round in two days ago before a 6" snowfall, we're heading down to Tennessee to get some golf in.

We're going to play Black Creek, Holston Hills and Tennessee National but wanted to know if there are any other courses worth playing near Knoxville or Chattanooga?  Cherokee C.C. I guess is undergoing a large renovation and Chattanooga C.C. is closed for the year.  Anyone have any other decent options in these areas?

Any help our thoughts would be appreciated.

Brian:

Since it appears that access isn't an issue, as your line-up is all private clubs, take a look at The Links at Kahite on Lake Tellico.  It's about 15 minutes from Tennessee National.

Kahiti is a big course, with the 9th measuring 800+ yds and a par 6.

Also, if you're going to Chattanooga to play Black Creek, go see Lookout Mountain CC.  Have you tried The Honors?

Eric,
Tried the Honors Course but they wouldn't let us on.  Lookout Mountain looks really nice, we'll give that a try.

I haven't had a chance to visit Tennessee National but have heard good reports so far.  Holston Hills is awesome and is one of the most underrated courses that I've seen.  I'm surprised to hear Chattanooga G & CC is closed, they had just finished some work there recently.

If you are looking for somewhere else to play, I would try River Islands which is just east of Holston Hills.  It's one of Art Hills better effort.

Most of the places I played in Tennessee were up in the mountains and wouldn't be the best places to try at this time of year most likely...they're a little off your path (Crossville which is about 90 minutes west of Knoxville, also about 90 minutes north of Chattanooga. The best courses were Stonehenge and Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain.

The Bear Trace course near Chattanooga is supposed to be pretty good by all accounts...Harrison Bay.

Brian , The Honors Course is actually closed for 3or4 months in the winter. Not sure if that may have been the reason. As you  no doubt are aware Atlanta is only another 2hrs South and can be a better bet weather wise. Also a multitude of great courses to chose from. Have Fun!

Adam,
Thanks for the help.  Yea, Chattanooga has some policy regarding outside play that won't allow us to play until after the January or so.....so thus, we can't make it.

Jack,
No, the Honors Course said we couldn't play, regardless of the season.  We've been thinking about Atlanta....but, I think we're going as far south as we dare.

If you like quirk and a throwback, why not try Sewanee GC?

Brian,

How many of the 1700 courses on the Golfweek nominated list are in the Knoxville, Cattanooga area?  Could you please list them?

John,
I think in the area are:
*Cherokee Country Club (undergoing renovations)
*Chattanooga CC (undergoing renovations)
*Ridges G&CC in Jonesborough
*Ridgefields CC in Kingsport
*Black Creek GC
*Holston Hills
*Honors Crse

I was interested in any courses that might not be on the list that are worth a see.  Tennesse National isn't but looks like its worth a see, that's why were playing it.

In my opinion Holston Hills is one of the very best championship Ross courses in the South, much less Tennessee. If you are near Knoxville you should take a ride out there. I do not know their guest policy but I'd take Holston over the Honors Course as the best in eastern Tennessee.

Michael,
I've played Holston and its one of my favorite classic courses, let alone one of my favorite Ross'.  We are playing out there one of the days.

Brian,

Thanks for the list.  I was curious if Brown Acres had been nominated yet.  It is an excellent layout with firm and fast conditions.  The first review on the following site is priceless.  http://www.golfable.com/golfcourses/courses/Chattanooga_TN_Brown_Acres_Golf_Course

Is this a muni course?  Who designed it?

I don't know much about public golf down there, but River Islands is definitely worth giving a look. It's outside of Knoxville and probably dirt cheap this time of year. Not a great course but it is certainly enjoyable with a couple of really good holes over the river.

I have heard the Langford greens at the Country Club in Morristown are among the best in the state.

In Chattanooga,  Brown Acres is fine but is on a very flat peice of property.

You might put Council Fire into the Chattanooga mix.  It is private, late 80s Robert Cupp, on NE side of town, and is definitely more interesting than Brown Acres IMO.

Agreed.   CC Morristown has very interesting greens.

The original 18 at Greysburg Hills (early 1979 Rees Jones) is also fun.  It is near Greenville,  northeast of Knoxville, actually very close to I-81.   Need to play the original 18 holes.  Now they have 27 holes.
